Did you know that reducing the number of cosmetics you use can actually help your skin?
Hello, this is Yonsei Bomvit Dermatology.
These days, many people use not just 5 or 7 basic skincare products, but even a sheet mask every day.
But is this kind of routine right for everyone?
Today, from a dermatologist’s perspective, we’ll introduce the “minimal basic care routine,” which keeps only the skincare essentials and reduces the rest.

Minimal Basic Care Routine
1️⃣ Why are we told to reduce skincare?
Using many basic products may seem beneficial,
but it can actually cause irritation and confusion for the skin.
✔ Layering multiple products can cause irritation due to ingredient interactions
✔ Preservatives and fragrances can accumulate more than active ingredients, increasing the possibility of side effects
✔ For people with a weakened skin barrier, skin trouble may worsen
In particular, for acne-prone or sensitive skin, excessive product use can actually make things worse.
2️⃣ How far can a minimal routine be reduced?
At dermatology clinics, we consider it enough to follow just these “three basic steps.”
✔ Cleansing: 1–2 times a day, with a mildly acidic, low-irritation cleanser
✔ Moisturizing: a moisture-focused moisturizer (tailored to skin type)
✔ Sun protection: SPF 30 or higher, 반드시 use before going out in the morning
These three are the key routine steps that dermatologists emphasize should never be skipped.
Other products, such as whitening or firming functional products, can be added selectively depending on your skin condition.
3️⃣ How should exceptions be handled in different situations?
Not every skin type should follow the same routine.
Adjustments are needed for certain skin types or situations.
✔ Acne-prone skin: add a topical acne treatment
✔ Very dry skin: quickly soothe with an oily moisturizer right after cleansing
✔ After laser procedures: use a soothing ampoule + restorative cream together
In other words, “minimal basic care” does not mean reducing everything unconditionally,
but rather organizing an overly complicated routine and keeping only what is truly necessary.
✨ In closing
More skincare is not always better.
To restore the skin’s natural resilience and balance, a minimal core routine can actually be more effective.
✔ Cleansing + moisturizing + sun protection
Based on these three basics,
try building a streamlined routine that fits your own skin type and situation.
At Yonsei Bomvit Dermatology, rather than recommending lots of products,
we guide you toward practical care that truly suits your skin.
