Nails and lips reflect the overall state of the body.
Hello, this is Yonsei Bomvit Dermatology.
When our skin becomes dry or breakouts appear, we usually look in the mirror first.
But did you know that nails and lips are also โhealth mirrorsโ connected to the skin?
Today, Iโll share the skin condition signals you can check through your nails and lips.

Skin Health Signals Seen in Nails and Lips
1๏ธโฃ What skin health signals do nails send?
โ Nails are made of the same keratin cells as skin, so they are closely related to skin condition.
- White horizontal lines appear?
This may suggest stress, lowered immunity, or nutritional imbalance. It is a symptom often seen when there is a lack of zinc or protein.
- Are your nails thin and easily broken?
Just like dry skin, nails are vulnerable to a lack of moisture. Especially in autumn and winter, it is important not only to use moisturizers but also to maintain water intake.
- Are your nails concave or dented?
This can be evidence of iron-deficiency anemia or chronic nutritional deficiency, which may appear along with skin problems.
โ During periods when the skin becomes dry or sensitive, white dead skin around the nail cuticles can also appear more easily. This may be a sign that the skin barrier function has weakened.
2๏ธโฃ What skin condition can be seen from the lips?
โ Because lips have very few sebaceous glands, they dry out much more easily than the skin.
- Are your lips cracked and peeling?
This may indicate a lack of moisture or a possible deficiency in the vitamin B group. In particular, when riboflavin (vitamin B2) is lacking, lip inflammation and angular cheilitis often occur.
- Are the corners of the mouth or the area around the lips red and stinging?
This may be contact dermatitis caused by external irritation, or mask-related eczema. Also check irritating lip products and ingredients in toothpaste.
- Is the lip color excessively pale?
Along with reduced skin tone, this may suggest anemia or circulation problems.
๐ If the skin on your lips frequently becomes chapped or cracked, you should not just apply lip balm; you should also manage water intake and nutritional supplementation together.
3๏ธโฃ How should you care for them?
โ Skin reflects the overall health condition of the body. The same is true for nails and lips.
Try the following checklist in daily life.
-
Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day
-
Use a moisturizing product with good hydration on nail cuticles and lips
-
Eat a balanced diet with vitamin B group, iron, zinc, and other nutrients
-
Avoid irritating lip products and cleansers, and use gentle ingredients
-
๋ฐ๋์ improve the habits of biting nails and licking lips
These signs in the nails and lips may simply be due to dryness or changes in the weather, but if they recur or gradually worsen, a dermatologic approach is needed.
At a dermatology clinic, if necessary, blood tests can be used to check for anemia and to determine whether there are nutritional deficiencies such as zinc, iron, or vitamin B2.
In addition, appropriate moisturizers, topical steroids, and antifungal agents may be used together to treat dermatitis around the nails and lips.
