Amid the flood of collagen products, what is the most effective method for the skin in reality?
Hello, this is Yonsei Bombit Dermatology.
Collagen is a key structural protein that maintains skin elasticity and density.
It makes up about 70% of the dermis and determines the skin’s volume and structure.
Collagen creams, collagen drinks, collagen jellies, and other
various products are being launched with claims of preventing skin aging,
but can these methods really contribute to increasing collagen in the dermal layer of the skin?
Today, based on the latest research evidence on collagen absorption and production,
I will explain the effects of topical collagen and oral collagen,
as well as collagen treatment approaches in dermatology.

How to increase collagen in the skin
1️⃣ Can topical collagen reach the dermis?
Collagen has a high-molecular-weight structure, with an average molecular weight of about 300,000 Da.
The stratum corneum of the skin typically limits the penetration of molecules larger than 500 Da,
so it is generally accepted that when collagen is applied to the skin, it is almost impossible for it to penetrate to the dermis (Schuetz et al., 2011).
📍 However, some products are processed into forms such as “low-molecular-weight hydrolyzed collagen” or “peptides,”
and may help with temporary surface hydration or improved skin texture.
But these effects are often due not so much to collagen itself as
to moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, ceramide, and peptides that are also included.
2️⃣ Can oral collagen be absorbed and reach the skin?
Collagen taken orally is hydrolyzed in the stomach,
then absorbed in the small intestine in the form of collagen peptides and moves into the bloodstream.
According to some studies, specific collagen peptides may reach the dermis of the skin
and may be involved in inducing collagen production through stimulation of fibroblasts (Proksch et al., 2014).
✔ The following conditions are needed for effectiveness:
-
Low-molecular-weight collagen peptides (3–6 kDa or less)
-
Daily intake of 2,500–10,000 mg
-
Consistent use for 8–12 weeks or longer
-
Animal-derived ingredients, mainly Type I and III
📍 However, individual differences are very large,
and because the rate at which orally ingested collagen reaches the skin is low,
it is more realistic to regard it as an adjunctive treatment rather than a standalone therapy.
3️⃣ What scientific methods can induce collagen production?
Collagen in the dermis naturally decreases with age,
and breakdown accelerates due to stimuli such as ultraviolet rays, reactive oxygen species, and inflammation.
In dermatology, based on this principle,
treatments that can stimulate collagen production are used
to help restore skin density and elasticity.
📌 Main treatment methods:
- Juvelook (PDLLA-based biostimulator)
Long-term induction of collagen production and improvement of dermal density
- Rejuran Healer (PN ingredient)
Effective for skin regeneration, elasticity recovery, and improvement of the skin barrier
High-intensity focused ultrasound stimulates the SMAS and dermis → collagen lifting
- TenTherma (radiofrequency RF)
Activates fibroblasts and remodels collagen through local heating of the dermis
📍 These treatments minimize tissue damage
while inducing internal regeneration,
so they can be expected to provide a more natural and longer-lasting improvement than simply filling from the outside.
🔬 In closing
Collagen is not something that simply builds up in the skin
just because you apply it or take it orally.
✔ From a dermatologic perspective:
-
Topical collagen → used for hydration
-
Oral collagen → limited use as a supplementary measure
-
Procedural approaches → can actually induce collagen regeneration
Taking these points into account, it is important to establish an appropriate collagen strategy suited to your skin condition.
