Are freckles congenital? Or are they caused by sunlight?
Hello, this is Yonsei Bombit Dermatology.
Those tiny brown spots scattered across the face, ‘freckles,’ can be especially noticeable in summer, which is why many people worry about them.
But are they really freckles? If they appeared suddenly after your 20s, they may actually be ‘melasma.’
Today, from a dermatologist’s perspective, we’ll explain the differences between freckles and melasma, as well as the causes and treatment of freckles.

Freckles with a strong genetic tendency
1️⃣ Are freckles genetic or caused by UV?
✔ Genetics is the biggest factor.
Freckles mostly develop due to genetic factors.
If one of your parents has freckles, there is a high chance they will appear in their children as well.
✔ UV exposure is a major triggering factor.
They may not be noticeable at birth, but after spending a lot of time in the sun, they can become darker or increase in number.
In particular, because they become much darker in summer, sun protection is important.
💡 Freckles are born with a genetic tendency, but depending on how much UV exposure you receive, they can become darker or lighter.
2️⃣ Can freckles be removed?
Yes, they can become lighter through repeated treatment and care.
📍 At Yonsei Bombit Dermatology, the following treatments are used in combination.
It evenly breaks down tiny pigment particles, effectively reducing freckles.
A dual-wavelength laser that evenly improves freckles and blemishes over a wide area.
For sensitive or shallow freckles, treatment can be performed in a gentle and stable way, especially for the first session.
✔ Treatment is repeated 3 to 5 times or more, and the number of sessions may vary depending on skin condition.
Sun protection must be used together to reduce recurrence.
3️⃣ What is the difference between freckles and melasma?
Freckles and melasma both look like brown pigmented spots, but their causes, onset timing, and treatment approaches are completely different.
| Category | Freckles | Melasma |
|---|
| Onset | Mostly in childhood or the teenage years | Late 20s and older |
| Location | Mainly nose and cheeks | Wider areas such as the forehead, cheeks, and under the eyes |
| Color | Light brown, individual spots | Dull brown, spread out broadly |
| Cause | Genetics + UV exposure | UV exposure, hormones, inflammation, stress |
| Aggravating factors | Sunlight | Sunlight, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, heat |
| Treatment response | Relatively quick improvement with repeated laser treatments | Gradual treatment needed, high chance of recurrence |
✔ In particular, freckles often refer to spots that appear in the late teens to early 20s,
and pigmentation that appears after the 20s is more likely to be melasma.
If it is hard to tell on your own whether it is true freckles, melasma, or blemishes, we recommend seeing a dermatologist.
Using a skin analysis device and a dermatologist’s visual assessment, we can provide an accurate explanation of the type and depth of the pigmentation, as well as the treatment direction.
🔍 If melasma is mistaken for freckles and treated with the wrong laser, the color may actually become darker, so caution is needed.
4️⃣ What can you do at home?
✔ Use thorough sun protection
Apply sunscreen with SPF50 and PA+++ or higher every day, and use physical protection such as a hat or parasol when outdoors.
✔ Use whitening-functional cosmetics
Ingredients such as tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and arbutin may be helpful.
✔ Reduce irritation
Rubbing the skin vigorously or overdoing peeling can irritate pigmentation instead.
✨ To wrap up
Freckles are often hereditary, but they can worsen depending on UV exposure and lifestyle habits.
Also, even if they look like freckles, if they appeared after your 20s, they are more likely to be ‘melasma,’ so
an accurate diagnosis should come first for treatment to proceed quickly and effectively.
At Yonsei Bombit Dermatology,
we differentiate between freckles and melasma, and with lasers and programs tailored to each individual’s skin,
we help improve pigmentation more accurately and naturally.
