I’m Director Park Jung-gi of SNU Entrance Station Dentist.
If there is a gap between your front teeth,
it can be a major concern.

2025.03.11
Because it is a highly visible area,
it can be on your mind every time you look in the mirror,
and when you talk or smile,
you may even develop the habit of raising your hand to cover it.
This gap between the front teeth
is also called diastema,
and it can occur for various reasons.
-
Imbalance between tooth size and jaw size
-
Small teeth or congenital missing teeth
-
Incorrect oral habits (e.g., thumb sucking, tongue thrusting)
-
Tooth movement due to periodontal disease
Today, at SNU Entrance Station Dentist,
I’d like to explain treatment using laminate.
First, let me organize the concept.
What is laminate?
It is a procedure in which
thin porcelain pieces are attached
to the tooth surface.
Just like nail art on your fingernails,
you can think of it as attaching custom-made “tooth nails.”
The thickness is generally about 0.3–0.7 mm,
which is several times the thickness of a hair,
and in recent years, it has become even thinner,
which is why it has also been called no-prep.
Procedure
The laminate explained at SNU Entrance Station Dentist
is not something everyone can necessarily have;
a doctor examines the oral condition
and decides after determining whether the procedure is appropriate.
This involves checking whether it can blend naturally,
considering the patient’s face shape, skin tone, and the color of the existing natural teeth.
If this method
can be carried out, generally
minimal tooth reduction (about 0.3–0.5 mm) is needed,
but sometimes no reduction is also possible,
by making the restoration very thin
and adding it on as a no-prep option.
While waiting for the custom-made restoration,
temporary teeth may be used if needed,
and when the final restoration is ready,
it is bonded with permanent adhesive.
Then natural-looking front teeth are completed.

Advantages
At SNU Entrance Station Dentist,
I will explain a few advantages.
- Natural appearance
It is so natural that it is difficult to distinguish from your original teeth.
- Minimally invasive
The amount of tooth shaping is minimized.
- Fast results
It can be completed in just 1–2 visits.
- Resistance to discoloration
Porcelain is less likely to stain from coffee, wine, and similar substances.
- Durability
If well cared for, it can last a long time.
Because of this, its popularity has been increasing recently,
and it is counted among the beauty procedures getting attention;
it is also used when you want bright white teeth
or a neat, aligned smile.
Comparison with other treatments
To fill the gap,
don’t you have to get orthodontic treatment?
You may be wondering,
orthodontics moves the actual position of the teeth,
whereas laminate improves only the appearance,
so the treatment period is relatively very short,
allowing for quick changes.
Also, compared with simply filling the gap with resin,
it is much stronger and has stronger adhesion.

The laminate explained today at SNU Entrance Station Dentist
is not just for cosmetic purposes;
it also enhances confidence and quality of life.
“I’m embarrassed that my front teeth show when I smile.”
That kind of statement
may soon become a thing of the past.
We will continue to support your bright smile
and will be back next time with even better content.
