Nakseongdae Station Dental Clinic: If an old front-tooth resin restoration has discolored and become stained, is retreatment needed?

When a cavity develops in a front tooth

or when it has worn down,

if the depth and extent are not large

and it is judged not to have affected the nerve,

a resin filling treatment is performed.

Resin has a very finely developed

range of filling materials.

Depending on its flowability,

it is divided into Flowable / Packable,

and it can be used differently depending on the treatment area.

The shades are also very diverse.

In addition to A1 ~ A4,

there is also a CV color specifically for the cervical area,

and depending on the location of application,

the clinician can choose the appropriate color

to restore the tooth.

In addition, there are materials that reflect not only differences in color

but also translucency,

so aesthetic value can be maintained.

Because it can be hardened immediately

using a light-curing unit,

the chair time is short,

which places very little burden on the patient receiving treatment,

and since all treatment can be completed on the same day,

patient satisfaction is very high.

Compared with prosthetic treatment,

the cost is also lower,

we actively use it for early caries or small cavities.

However,

even resin, which is such a good treatment,

has its limits.

That is the discoloration of the material and staining around it that occurs over time.

If the filling has been in place for a long time,

or depending on external factors such as

dietary habits or smoking,

the material itself may turn yellow

or staining may develop in the gap between the natural tooth and the material.

As there is no permanent treatment,

this is a natural result that occurs as time passes.

The case shown today at Nakseongdae Station Dental Clinic also had staining in three anterior teeth, numbers 11, 12, and 21.

The black areas caught on the uneven surface

cannot be removed by brushing.

Also, because these are front teeth,

they are immediately visible,

which is expected to cause considerable stress.

In such cases, it is better to remove the existing filling material

and restore the tooth anew.

The material that had been layered on previously

is carefully scraped away,

and the space is then refilled.

At this point, it is important that the doctor works delicately

so that no sense of incongruity or foreign-body sensation is felt.

The initially stained resin

and the rough surface around it

have now been restored to be clean

and natural again,

and polishing was also performed around the area,

so you can see that it has become smooth.

It can be done immediately on the same day,

does not require anesthesia,

and is a procedure after which you can eat or brush your teeth right away,

so

most patients who undergo anterior resin treatment

say, “I should have done it sooner~” and are very pleased.

For a day or two, you only need to be careful with foods that are too hard

or sticky,

and since that is not a major inconvenience,

there is nothing to worry about.
