Hello,
I’m Director Park Jeong-gi of Sillim Dental Clinic Remember.
Did everyone have a good holiday?
This time, the long Golden Week holiday meant that
many people seem to have spent quality time with their families
and enjoyed lots of delicious food.
As soon as the holiday ended,
quite a lot of patients came to the clinic,
and there were especially many who visited because restorations such as inlays or crowns had fallen off or come loose,
or because their teeth had cracked.
Today, let’s look at a case of a “cracked tooth”
and learn about the treatment methods together.
This is medical information that would be good to know,
so please focus and read until the end.
- Causes of a Cracked Front Tooth
Front teeth are, quite literally,
the teeth at the very front of the mouth,
and they serve an aesthetic function
as well as an important role in speech.
So when a problem occurs,
it shows right away,
which is why it needs to be addressed quickly.
Because of their location,
when you fall or experience trauma,
they are inevitably the first to take a major impact.
In addition, if you have a habit of biting chopsticks
or if your upper and lower teeth meet directly in an edge-to-edge bite,
there is a higher chance of problems occurring.
At Sillim Dental Clinic, I think I have often explained cases of anterior tooth fractures caused by accidents such as falls or collisions.
The case I will explain today
was prepared because it is a little different in perspective.

Looking at the photo,
you can see that the tips of the four upper front teeth,
that is, the area near the incisal edge,
are slightly chipped and rough.
We do not know exactly where or how the injury happened,
and the patient said the tooth had chipped without their noticing during the holiday.
From the perspective of Sillim Dental Clinic,
this case can be considered a fracture case caused by an edge bite,
accompanied by orthodontic issues as well.
- What Is an Anterior Edge Bite?

It is not a normal bite in which
the upper teeth (maxillary incisors) cover the lower teeth (mandibular incisors).

It refers to a malocclusion in which
the front tooth tips touch or interlock with each other.

Common characteristics include the upper and lower teeth directly meeting and interfering with each other,
which can lead to root resorption, wear, fracture,
and interference with root development due to chewing force or external impact.
It can also cause the lips to protrude abnormally,
reducing aesthetics,
and may create discomfort in functional aspects such as eating and speaking.
This is often associated with Class III malocclusion,
but the biggest issue in the case shown today at Sillim Dental Clinic
is the fracture caused by an edge bite.
- What Is the Treatment Method?
Of course, the fundamental approach is to provide orthodontic treatment
so that the upper teeth can properly cover the lower teeth
and normal occlusion can be restored.
However, at Sillim Dental Clinic, if a patient does not personally feel the need for treatment
and is not prepared in terms of time or cost,
we do not tell them to force it.
Of course, from a dental perspective,
it is better to treat it as soon as possible,
but treatment should begin only when the patient is mentally ready
and truly wants to proceed.^^
In this case, the patient wanted only the broken and rough areas addressed right away,
so we provided same-day treatment using composite resin.

2025.07.29
Light-cured composite resin
is a method in which a hard material with a color similar to natural teeth
is layered onto the fractured area and hardened,
allowing treatment to be completed in one day.
After lightly smoothing the roughened surface
and applying acid etching and bonding agent
so the material can adhere well,
we fill and cure the resin,
and it is finished in under 30 minutes.
Unlike orthodontic treatment,
it does not take a long time and the cost is not very high,
so patient satisfaction is very high.
The part that looked unsightly because the incisal edge lengths differed at the initial visit
was restored to a consistent shape,
and the area that seemed likely to touch the lower teeth first and chip again
was also carefully adjusted.
- Precautions and Limitations

2025.07.29
The process explained today at Sillim Dental Clinic,
which restored a front tooth fractured by an edge bite with resin,
requires an accurate diagnosis and skilled procedure,
and if the fractured area is deep
or the natural tooth structure is weak,
it may be difficult to secure enough strength with resin alone.
Depending on the condition of the tooth,
the treatment method may differ,
so in such cases the judgment of the attending dentist is important.
In addition, regular checkups are needed afterward
to confirm the maintenance state of the resin.
I hope the information explained today at Sillim Dental Clinic
was helpful,
and I will end the post here.
The weather has become much colder,
so please take care of your health.
This was Director Park Jeong-gi of Seoul Remember.
Thank you.
