Nice to meet you,
I’m Director Sang Jin-gyu of Seoul Remember Dental Clinic at Sillim Station.
Tooth gems are
decorative accessories attached to the tooth surface,
and they are applied by securing them onto natural teeth
using a resin-based adhesive.
As they spread like a trend,
more and more people have attached them,
but many do not realize that removal requires more caution
than expected.
So today, at the Sillim Station dental clinic,
I’d like to share some useful information
related to this.
I will explain the key points of tooth gem removal
in two parts.
First, completely removing any remaining resin
used for bonding
Second, not scratching or damaging the natural tooth surface
in the process
Even if it looks clean to the naked eye,
if residual resin remains,
staining can occur in those gaps,
or in some cases it can cause secondary caries.
Because enamel does not regenerate once damaged,
choosing the right instruments and operating direction is very important.
In particular, near the interproximal areas or around the gingival margin,
a wrong approach can irritate the gums
or lead to cervical abrasion,
so a more delicate approach is required.

To briefly show you a real case from the Sillim Station dental clinic,
a patient visited with tooth gems attached to a total of four teeth:
the two maxillary central incisors (teeth 11 and 21)
and the left and right canines (teeth 13 and 23).
The patient wanted to keep the two canines
and remove only the two central incisors.
Is selective removal like this possible?
At the Sillim Station dental clinic,
we explain that it is also possible to remove only the desired area
instead of everything.
However, even in such cases,
the same two considerations must be followed,
and the procedure must be carried out carefully.

During the procedure, a specialized bur is applied step by step
to remove the resin layer by layer,
and at the end, a polishing tool should be used
to finish the enamel surface smoothly.
Also, when the patient runs their tongue over the tooth surface,
we need to check whether there are any rough or scratchy areas
before we can say the procedure is complete.
Of course, the medical staff also finish only after checking with an explorer and visually
that nothing remains,
and they must carefully verify whether the surface gloss has been restored
close to that of the original tooth.
The longer the attachment period,
the harder the adhesive becomes,
and the more difficult removal becomes.
So at the Sillim Station dental clinic,
even if it was attached for cosmetic purposes,
we consider it important not to leave it in place for too long.
Tooth gem removal is
not simply the end of a cosmetic procedure.
The key is a delicate process that thoroughly removes any remaining adhesive
while protecting the precious natural tooth.
If you are now considering having it removed,
don’t try to peel it off yourself at home
or tear it off with your fingernails.
We recommend that you 반드시 receive professional treatment with instruments and equipment,
such as at a Sillim Station dental clinic.
Thank you for reading.
