Comparing Treatment Methods and How to Make a Smart Choice

“Some places recommend lasers,
while others say to take medicine...
Why do they all say different things?”
If you have visited dermatology clinics several times for acne treatment, this is probably a question you have often had.
It can be confusing.
Because each clinic emphasizes different treatments, you may end up wondering, “Whom should I believe?”
Even I had these questions early on while treating acne patients.
But after treating many patients, I realized that acne has many causes and there is not just one solution.
Today, I will explain why dermatology clinics say different things, what treatment methods are available, and how to choose the right clinic.

Why different clinics say different things

Acne is not just a pimple on the skin.
It is a complex condition influenced by many factors, including hormones, genetics, diet, sleep, stress, and skin type.
For example, some people develop acne because too much sebum is produced,
while others experience severe inflammation due to stress and lack of sleep.
For some, family history also has a major effect.
Because of this, each doctor may naturally have a different perspective and different treatment priorities.

One clinic may recommend lasers because reducing inflammation quickly is important.
Another may emphasize medication treatment to fundamentally change the skin environment.
Yet another may recommend extraction or peeling because clogged pores need to be cleared.
In other words, different opinions from clinics do not mean someone is “wrong”; they simply mean that different aspects are being emphasized according to each patient’s condition.

Comparison of acne treatment methods

- Medication treatment
Acne is not only a problem on the surface of the skin; it is also related to conditions inside the skin, so medication can bring fundamental changes.
Prevents pores from becoming clogged and reduces inflammation on the skin’s surface.
Examples include retinoids (promote exfoliation), antibiotics (suppress bacteria), and benzoyl peroxide (helps suppress sebum).

Used when acne is severe or highly inflamed.
Antibiotics help calm inflammation, and isotretinoin is a strong medication used for severe acne.

- Extraction
Acne extraction is a treatment that removes sebum and inflammation accumulated inside pores.
On the surface, it may look like simple “squeezing,” but in fact it must be done safely using sterilized instruments and professional methods.
It has the advantage of opening blocked pores right away and reducing visible acne,
but if you force it by hand at home, the risk of bacterial infection or scarring increases greatly.
That is why extraction should always be done professionally at a clinic.

- Peeling
Peeling is a procedure in which acid ingredients are applied to the skin to remove built-up dead skin cells on the surface and dissolve waste inside the pores.
It has the benefit of brightening the skin tone and making the pores look cleaner.
However, people with sensitive skin may experience irritation, a burning sensation, or redness.
In other words, peeling is part of maintenance that helps organize the skin’s surface so that fewer acne breakouts occur.
In addition, laser treatments or LDM, which are used to manage acne marks or scars, along with other supportive procedures that help soothe the skin, can aid recovery.

Criteria you must check when choosing a clinic
These are the four criteria I personally emphasize to patients in the consultation room.

-
What medications and equipment are used for treatment
Be sure to check what medications are used and what their purpose is.
-
Expected treatment duration and number of sessions
Acne does not end in a short time, so it is important to hear the plan.
-
Guidance on side effects and the possibility of recurrence
You should check whether the clinic honestly explains the risks and how to handle them.
-
Guidance on lifestyle management
Diet, sleep, and stress management are also addressed together.
In particular, you should avoid statements like “It will be completely cured in just one or two sessions.”
Acne can improve in the long term only when consistent treatment and lifestyle management are carried out together.
Do you now understand why different Sinchon acne dermatology clinics say different things?
In the end, the difference comes from the fact that each patient’s situation is different and each doctor emphasizes a different approach.
What matters is not deciding who is right or wrong, but finding a treatment plan that suits your skin.
After reading today’s article,
please write down the questions you should ask during your consultation,
and I recommend getting consultations from at least two places and comparing them.
As I treat patients every day,
I feel that those who continue treatment and care ultimately regain confidence along with clear skin.
I hope this article helps reduce confusion when choosing a clinic and helps you make a wiser decision.
