Double Chin Lifting in Hongdae: A Changing Facial Contour,
Which Procedure Is Right for My Face Shape?

“I don’t have much fat...
But my jawline keeps collapsing.
It looks like I have a double chin, and it’s so stressful.”
This is something people who are worried about a double chin often say when they come in.
Many people who feel their facial contour has collapsed because of a double chin assume it is due to fat, but when we actually look closely, that is much less often the case.
A double chin is not caused simply by fat accumulation. It is a complex issue in which the structure beneath the skin and reduced elasticity work together.
That is why you need to identify the cause accurately and choose the procedure that matches it, so the facial contour can be naturally refined and the jawline can look more defined.
Today, I’ll walk through the causes of a double chin and the lifting approaches for each cause, as I often explain them in the clinic.

Causes of a double chin

A double chin can be caused simply by weight gain, but the cause can also differ depending on age.
In people in their 20s, a double chin is often caused by a larger amount of subcutaneous fat.
This type of fat-based double chin occurs when thick fat accumulates under the chin, making the contour look blunt.
It can be especially likely when body weight changes frequently or when you maintain a posture that pushes the chin forward for long periods.
In this case, rather than simple skin lifting, an approach that reduces the fat layer itself while improving elasticity is needed.

On the other hand, a double chin that develops after the 30s is a different story.
At this stage, the main issue is not fat but the structure beneath the skin — that is, sagging of the SMAS layer.
This elasticity-loss type of double chin can cause the area under the chin to fold even without much fat when aging or loss of elasticity occurs,
and as a result, the face can appear heavy and lowered.
So after the 30s, simply losing weight is not enough; the layer that supports the facial shape itself needs to be lifted for the contour to improve.

Which procedure restores facial contour?

The key to double chin lifting is a layer-by-layer approach.
Depending on which layer is causing the problem, the depth and energy that need to be stimulated will differ.

First, InMode FX is effective for a fat-based double chin.
InMode FX uses radiofrequency energy to deliver heat to the 6–8 mm fat layer beneath the skin.
This heat contracts fat cells and simultaneously stimulates collagen production to improve elasticity.
When there is a lot of fat under the chin or the face looks blunt, it has the advantage of both reducing fat and improving contour at the same time.
After 2–3 weeks, the jawline becomes naturally smoother and the facial contour looks lighter.

On the other hand, HIFU lifting is appropriate for a double chin caused by reduced elasticity.
HIFU focuses high-intensity ultrasound to a depth of 4.5 mm beneath the skin, directly stimulating the SMAS layer (the fascial layer) to lift sagging tissue.
Representative devices such as Ultherapy Prime and Shurink Universe create micro-coagulation points to tighten the fascial layer,
and collagen regeneration occurs after 2–4 weeks, bringing about a sharper jawline and a firmer facial shape.

And if it is a mixed-type double chin with both problems (fat + reduced elasticity), we recommend combining InMode and HIFU or using Trinity Lift Toning.
Trinity uses three laser wavelengths — 755 nm, 808 nm, and 1064 nm — simultaneously to stimulate both the deep and middle layers of the skin.
In this process, the fascial layer is lifted, the fat layer is refined, and the skin tone improves.
In other words, with one procedure, you can get double chin lifting, facial contour refinement, and improvement in skin texture at the same time.

Post-procedure care

For lifting, the period 2–4 weeks after the procedure is more important than immediately after it.
During this time, new collagen is produced beneath the skin, and as the fascial layer stabilizes, the facial contour gradually takes shape.
At this stage, avoid hot compresses, saunas, and strong massage, and focus on adequate hydration, sun protection, and moisturizing care.
Lifting is a procedure that gradually shows change over time rather than an “instant change.”
After 1–2 weeks, the area under the chin becomes smoother, and by weeks 4–6, you can see the entire face shape settle into a more stable contour.
If you are considering double chin lifting, first identify the cause accurately.
-
If fat is the main cause → InMode FX
-
If reduced elasticity is the main cause → HIFU (Ultherapy·Shurink)
-
If both are concerns → Trinity Lift Toning
With this approach, beyond simply reducing chin fat, it is possible to perform lifting that naturally refines the overall facial contour and face shape.
Lifting is not a procedure that simply pulls on the surface; it is a process of rebuilding your facial structure.
We hope you will receive a thorough consultation and decide at a place that can provide a customized procedure based on an accurate diagnosis.
