Frequently Asked Questions During a Consultation: Number of Sessions and Pain, Organized

"How many sessions do I need for it to work?"
"Does it hurt a lot?"
As summer gets closer, consultations for laser hair removal are noticeably increasing these days.
Of course, price and value for money are important too,
but when it comes down to making a decision, what people worry about most seems to be how much it hurts and how many sessions it takes to see results.
Today, I’ll answer these questions one by one.

The Principle of Laser Hair Removal

Before talking about the number of sessions and pain, let’s first look at how laser hair removal works.
Laser hair removal works by allowing laser energy to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair.
As that heat is delivered to the hair follicle, it gradually suppresses the hair’s growth function.
There is one important thing to keep in mind here.

For the laser to be effective, the hair follicle must be in the "anagen" phase.
Hair has three cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Among these, the only time the laser can act is during the anagen phase, when the follicle is actively growing.
However, not all hair in our body is in the anagen phase at the same time.
So only the follicles that were in the anagen phase at the time of treatment respond, and the rest are treated sequentially in later sessions.

During consultations, I often hear people ask, "I had one or two sessions, so why is it growing back again?"
Once this principle is explained, most people understand and say, "Oh, so that’s why you need multiple sessions."
If you know this in advance before deciding on laser hair removal, it will be much more helpful when planning your treatment.

How Much Does It Hurt?
One of the first things people ask when considering hair removal laser treatment is pain.
In the past, laser hair removal was described as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin, so it was not exactly gentle.
But with advances in equipment, it has become much more comfortable than before.

Accent, one of the devices used for underarm laser hair removal, is equipped with a cooling system.
Because it delivers cooling to the treatment area while lowering the skin surface temperature as the laser is applied,
discomfort caused by heat stimulation can be significantly reduced.
Of course, rather than saying it completely "eliminates" pain, you may still feel a slight stinging or warmth, especially in sensitive areas.
It also varies depending on each person’s pain sensitivity and the area being treated.

In practice, many people arrived very worried the first time, but after the procedure said, "It was much better than I expected."
If you are particularly sensitive to pain, it is a good idea to check in advance whether the clinic explains this thoroughly before the procedure.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?
As mentioned earlier, laser hair removal only works on follicles in the anagen phase, so it does not end with just one session.
For underarms, generally 5 to 10 sessions can be expected to provide sufficient results.
The reason this range is broad is that each person’s hair thickness, density, growth cycle, and skin condition are different.

If the hair is thick and dark, the laser energy is well absorbed by the pigment, so relatively quick results can be expected, whereas
if the hair is fine or light in color, more sessions may be needed.

The interval between sessions is also important. Usually, treatments are done every 4 to 6 weeks.
The idea is to leave enough time in line with the growth cycle so that follicles that were in the resting phase during this treatment can enter the growth phase by the next session.
However, rather than being too fixated on the exact number of sessions from the start, it is better to adjust while monitoring progress.

Today, we looked at the frequently asked questions about the number of sessions and pain during Shinchon underarm hair removal consultations, along with the principle of laser hair removal.
It would be good to remember these two things:
that laser hair removal works only on follicles in the growth phase, so multiple sessions at regular intervals are needed,
and that using equipment with a cooling system can help reduce heat-related discomfort during treatment,
