A “mole” is a mark formed when cells that produce a pigment called melanin gather in one place.

This group of cells is called “mole cells.” The characteristics of a mole differ depending on whether these cells are located shallowly in the outer layer of the skin or extend deeply into the layer beneath it.

Moles can generally be divided into three types according to their depth.

1. Shallow moles

This is when the mole cells are located shallowly in the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis.

They are usually flat and have a distinct color. Since they are close to the surface, they are relatively easier to treat.

2. Medium depth

A form extending across the epidermis and dermis

This is when the mole cells extend across the epidermis and dermis.

They may feel slightly raised to the touch and have greater depth to address than shallow moles.

3. Deep moles

This is when the mole cells extend deeply into the dermis, the lower layer of the skin.

They are often raised and thick. Because they have greater depth, they are frequently treated in stages rather than all at once.

During consultations, I was frequently asked, “How many treatments will I need?”

Even among moles, some cases can be completed in one session, while others require treatment over several sessions.

The difference ultimately depends on where the mole cells are located and how deep they are.

Let’s look at the factors that affect the number of treatments.

1. Location of the mole cells

When the mole cells are shallow and close to the surface, they can generally be treated in one session.

Conversely, when they are located deep in the lower layers, they may remain beneath the surface if only the surface is treated.

2. Differences in depth

Even for the same type of mole, greater depth requires a more cautious approach.

Treating it too deeply all at once can lead to scarring, so it is often addressed in stages.

3. Amount of pigment

The darker and more pigmented a mole is, the more area there may be to treat.

4. Cases that appear to be recurrent

How does a CO2 laser work?

One method commonly used for mole removal is the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser.

A CO2 laser uses light with a long wavelength of 10,600 nm.

This light is readily absorbed by the water in our skin tissue.

When the light reaches the water, the area is momentarily heated and vaporizes. This process of removing tissue is called “vaporization.”

In simple terms, it gently removes the tissue making up the mole, layer by very thin layer.

Thanks to these characteristics, CO2 lasers are widely used to treat small moles, shallow moles located close to the surface, and various types of pigmented lesions.

However, the appropriate method depends on the mole’s depth, location, and condition, so please proceed only after having a thorough consultation with a medical professional.

Side effects such as erythema, scab formation, hyperpigmentation, and, rarely, hypopigmentation or depressed scars may occur after the procedure.
