For those considering laminate veneers,
one of the biggest concerns is how much tooth reduction is needed.
“Do I need to shave down a lot of my teeth?”
“Is it possible with almost no reduction?”
To put it simply,
not everyone is a candidate for minimal-preparation laminate veneers.
However, if you meet the three conditions below,
it may be possible to consider veneers with minimal tooth reduction.
① When the teeth are relatively well aligned
If the front teeth are significantly protruded,
or there is severe crowding or protrusion,
minimal-preparation laminate veneers are difficult.
However,
✔ If the teeth are relatively well aligned
✔ If the goal is to improve slight asymmetry or shape
natural improvement may be possible with veneers
without having to reshape the teeth much.
If alignment correction is needed,
rather than forcing veneer treatment,
orthodontic treatment or another procedure is recommended first.
② When there is enough room in tooth size and shape
If the teeth are small or thin,
there may not be enough space to place veneers,
which can actually require more reduction.
On the other hand,
✔ If the tooth width or length is appropriate
✔ If the front teeth feel slightly large
③ When the bite force (occlusion) is stable
Because veneers are thin ceramic restorations,
if the bite is unstable, the risk of fracture is higher.
In particular,
minimal-preparation laminate veneers may not be suitable.
On the other hand,
✔ If the bite is stable
✔ If excessive force is not placed on the front teeth
then even after minimal-preparation laminate veneers,
they can be used stably for a long time.
Minimal-preparation laminate veneers
are a treatment that requires a precise diagnosis first.
Even for the same front-tooth veneers,
the treatment method can vary greatly depending on
the condition, alignment, and bite.
If you are considering veneers,
we recommend first finding out whether you are a candidate for minimal-preparation treatment
through a consultation.
