Hello.
When seeing patients, there are more cases than you might expect where someone comes in saying, “It doesn’t hurt that much,”
but after an examination, a cracked tooth is found.
Today, I’d like to talk about what a cracked tooth is, why it is dangerous, and how it is treated—questions patients often ask.
🔍 What Is a Cracked Tooth?
A cracked tooth is, quite literally, a tooth with a microscopic crack.
Even if it looks fine from the outside, in many cases the crack has actually progressed into the inside of the tooth.
✔ People who often eat hard foods
✔ People who have a habit of clenching their teeth tightly
✔ People who grind their teeth or clench them
✔ People with old metal restorations
In these cases, the likelihood of a cracked tooth is higher.

⚠ Why Shouldn’t a Cracked Tooth Be Left Untreated?
The biggest issue with a cracked tooth is that
in the early stages, there is little or only intermittent pain.
But as time passes,
-
a sharp, brief pain when chewing
-
sensitivity to cold water
-
the crack progresses further and causes nerve inflammation
-
in severe cases, it can even lead to tooth extraction
it may worsen.
👉 That is why early diagnosis and treatment are most important.
🦷 Cracked Tooth Diagnosis at Clair Dental Clinic
At Clair Dental Clinic,
are used to accurately identify the location and depth of the crack.
In order not to miss cracks that cannot be seen on the surface,
we practice treatment based on the principle of “checking carefully whenever there is even the slightest suspicion.”
🛠 How Is a Cracked Tooth Treated?
The treatment method varies depending on the extent of the crack.
✔ Early crack
→ The progression is prevented with a crown that protects the tooth.
✔ If the crack has reached the nerve
→ Root canal treatment followed by a crown is performed to preserve the tooth as much as possible.
✔ If the tooth is already severely fractured
→ Unfortunately, extraction may be necessary in some cases.
That is why I always tell my patients:
👉 “The best treatment is to come in before it hurts.”
💙 If You Want to Use Your Teeth for a Long Time
Once a cracked tooth occurs, it does not recover naturally.
Instead, how quickly it is found and protected makes a big difference in how long the natural tooth can be preserved.
If you feel something unusual when chewing,
or you have pain that only occurs at a certain angle,
please do not brush it off and think, “It will get better.” Be sure to get it checked.
