Hello. This is Claire Dental Clinic near Seolleung Station.
When consulting about implants,
many people become worried after hearing things like,
“Implants are difficult because there is not enough bone,”
or
“A sinus lift is needed.”
Today, I’d like to calmly explain
the maxillary sinus lift,
just as I would in the treatment room,
because it is one of the topics patients ask about most often.
What is a maxillary sinus lift?
The maxillary sinus is an air-filled space located above the upper molars.
If an upper molar was lost a long time ago, or if a lot of the jawbone has been resorbed,
there are many cases where the bone thickness is insufficient to place an implant.
At that time, after carefully lifting the floor of the maxillary sinus
and filling it with bone graft material,
the surgery that creates enough bone height to place an implant
is called a maxillary sinus lift.

Is a maxillary sinus lift always a major surgery?
Many people think,
“Maxillary sinus lift = a risky surgery,”
but that is not necessarily true.
🔹 Depending on the degree of bone deficiency
-
In some cases, a simple crestal approach is sufficient
-
A lateral approach is performed only when necessary
🔹 With accurate CT analysis and
🔹 Extensive clinical experience,
it is a procedure that can be safely planned and performed.
At Claire Dental Clinic,
we do not recommend unnecessary surgery,
and only perform it within the minimum necessary scope
when it is truly needed.

The most important points during a maxillary sinus lift
The parts I consider most important during treatment are as follows.
1️⃣ Accurate diagnosis
We carefully check the condition of the jawbone, the position of the maxillary sinus, and the thickness of the membrane
using 3D CT.
2️⃣ A treatment plan that does not overreach
We decide based on the patient’s condition whether same-day placement is possible,
or whether it is safer to wait after bone grafting.
3️⃣ Minimizing side effects
We prioritize safety in surgery,
while also considering the possibility of maxillary sinus membrane damage and inflammation.
Who may need a maxillary sinus lift
✔ People who need an upper molar implant
✔ People who have been told they have insufficient jawbone
✔ People who were told they need a bone graft but did not receive a clear explanation
✔ People who want their implant to be used for a long time and remain stable
Claire Dental Clinic’s principles
An implant is
not a treatment that is only okay for now,
but a treatment that should remain problem-free even 10 years later.
The same goes for a maxillary sinus lift.
Rather than asking whether it “can” be done,
it is important to first determine whether the condition is appropriate for doing it.
At Claire Dental Clinic,
we provide treatment based on these basic principles:
✔ Thorough explanations
✔ No excessive treatment
✔ Treatment directly supervised and handled by the director
If you have any questions about maxillary sinus lifts or implants,
don’t worry too much
and feel free to come in for a consultation.
The director of Claire Dental Clinic will personally consult with you.
Thank you.
