Hello, this is Director Choi Junghyuk of Apgujeong Seoul Plastic Surgery.
Today, I’d like to explain chin implant surgery for a recessed chin, along with a real patient case in which the chin was improved through this procedure.
A patient in their 20s visited us for consultation to improve a recessed chin and the slight protrusion of the mouth caused by a small chin.

The lower jaw size was appropriate and the bite was normal, but the size of the chin and the vertical length of the jaw were relatively small,
and the chin tip was set back.
The patient hoped to see the greatest possible effect relative to the cost and time invested,
so we decided to improve it by inserting a chin implant suited to the patient.
What is a recessed chin?
A recessed chin refers to a case where the chin tip is retruded or its length is insufficient,
making the lower part of the face look lacking.
When the chin tip is insufficient, the boundary between the neck and the face becomes unclear,
and the jawline on both sides drops down and then suddenly appears to be cut off,
which makes the facial contour look unnatural
and also gives the impression that the mouth is relatively protruded.
Types of recessed chin
[When only the chin tip is small]
The overall lower jaw size and the bite are normally well aligned,
but only the chin tip is small.
People in this category are what many would commonly call having a recessed chin.
[When the lower jaw is small]
When the entire lower jaw is small and set back,
the lower teeth are also set back, so the bite does not align properly.
If this condition is severe, it is called mandibular hypoplasia.

Before surgery, the chin was small and the projection of the chin tip was insufficient, so the mouth looked slightly protruded.
After surgery, the chin tip can be seen to have moved forward diagonally,
making the face look slimmer like a V-line and improving the protruding mouth.
Methods for correcting a recessed chin (fillers, chin implant, genioplasty)
[Fillers]
The solution for a recessed chin is to make the small jawbone appear larger,
but if fillers are used for a recessed chin, the tissue can become thicker and sag downward,
making it difficult to create the shape patients want.
[Chin implant]
Chin implant surgery and genioplasty produce similar cosmetic results,
but the methods are different.
First, chin implant surgery is a procedure in which an implant of a size suited to the individual is inserted beneath the periosteum surrounding the chin tip to enlarge the chin and improve a recessed chin.
Chin implant surgery takes about 20 minutes, so it is relatively short,
does not cause much swelling,
and is a procedure with good results relative to the time required.
[Genioplasty]
Genioplasty is a surgery in which the retruded chin bone is cut and then moved forward to permanently correct the recessed chin.
Because genioplasty is usually considered a larger procedure than a chin implant,
it is often performed together with facial contouring surgery,
and the cost is relatively higher and the recovery period is longer.

If you are curious about facial contouring or chin implants, or are considering surgery,
please visit in person and find the contour line that suits you through a one-on-one consultation with a specialist.
Thank you.
