Hello, I’m Director Choi Joong-hyeok of Apsgujeong Seoul Plastic Surgery.
With a case of a long nose and hump nose treated at our clinic, I’d like to explain the midface length that can be improved through rhinoplasty.
How Hump Nose and Drooping Nose Affect Facial Shape

A hump nose refers to a nose with a protruding middle section.
This can make the nose look longer
and make the facial proportions feel unbalanced.

A drooping nose tip is a shape where the tip of the nose
hangs downward even without smiling or any change in expression.
This can make the midface and the overall
face shape look longer, which is why many people want
to improve a hump nose and a long drooping nose.
Ideal Facial Proportions
Upper face 0.9, midface 1 : lower face 0.8

Facial proportions can be divided into three standards
to determine the ideal face shape.
In general, the upper face is 0.9 : the midface 1 : the lower face 0.8.
In other words, when the midface proportion is close to 1,
we can say the overall facial balance looks more harmonious.
Rhinoplasty That Makes the Midface Look Shorter

If you look at the patient’s nose, you can see that it has a hump
and the tip is drooping downward.
First, we refined the slight bump on the bridge of the nose
to help create a cleaner nasal line.

To raise the drooping tip in line with the refined bridge
and strengthen support, we used septal cartilage
or rib cartilage as a support structure,
and used ear cartilage to create a natural-looking
nose tip shape.
When performing nose tip surgery, it is important to consider
the ideal nasolabial angle,
(for men, 90–95 degrees; for women, 95–105 degrees)
If surgery is performed without considering this angle,
the nose shape may appear asymmetrical, or the nasolabial folds may look more pronounced, or it may look like a protruding mouth.

You can see that the previously drooping nose tip has been lifted
smoothly and naturally after surgery,
and at the same time, the proportions of the midface have improved.
※ At this time, if the starting point of the nasal bridge is too high,
it may actually make the nose and face look longer.
It is important to perform surgery while considering the facial proportions that suit you,
with a nose bridge that is not too high and has a slight curve.
