Hello, this is Dr. Choi Junghyeok, a specialist at Apgujeong Seoul Plastic Surgery.
When consulting about chin surgery, one of the most frequently asked questions, just as much as the surgical method, is about post-surgery care.
In particular, chin implant surgery is often performed through an intraoral incision, so properly following instructions such as keeping the tape on, how to gargle, and daily precautions has an important effect on recovery speed and the stability of the results.
Today, I will explain in detail the precautions you should definitely follow after chin surgery, step by step.
[1] Why is tape applied to the chin?

- The chin tape is used to secure the implant, and please keep it on for 2 to 3 days.
- Swelling and bruising may be slightly present for 3 days to 1 week.
After chin surgery, tape is applied immediately after the procedure so that the chin implant can settle in place stably.

This tape is not just for protection; it also helps reduce early swelling and keep the implant from moving.

Just as tape is applied after nose surgery, this is a step to reduce early swelling and promote stable recovery.

Usually, swelling after chin surgery is at its greatest for 2 to 3 days, and then gradually decreases.
To reduce the amount of early swelling, it is best to keep the tape on for about 2 to 3 days.

Some people ask whether the tape can be removed early, but this may vary depending on the degree of swelling.

If there is almost no swelling, early removal may be possible, but we recommend keeping it on for 2 to 3 days for recovery.
After that, it can be removed without any additional treatment.
[2] Why gargling is important after chin surgery

- Gargle 5 to 6 times with water after meals and drinks
- Use gargling solution for the final rinse
- Continue until the stitches are removed

Because chin implant surgery is performed through an intraoral incision, postoperative oral hygiene care is very important.

In particular, if food gets caught between the stitches, it can cause inflammation or delay recovery, so you must gargle after every meal.

For gargling, it is best to rinse thoroughly with water first and use gargling solution for the final rinse.
You can brush your teeth, but be careful not to let the toothbrush touch the wound area.

Also, rather than foods with lots of crumbs, such as snacks and bread, it is recommended to eat porridge or soft foods for about one to two days after surgery.

The most important thing is not the type of food, but consistently gargling so that food does not get caught in the stitches.

Some people pull on their lips to check the wound, but the oral mucosa is weaker than the skin, so pulling too hard can cause tearing.

Therefore, it is best to avoid pulling on the lips to check the wound area.
[3] Daily precautions after chin surgery

- Avoid pressure on the chin for 1 month after surgery
- Be careful not to rest your chin on your hand
- Refrain from alcohol and smoking for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery

The most important thing after chin implant surgery is to make sure that strong pressure is not applied to the implant.
Resting your chin on your hand or touching it firmly may affect the implant position, so it is best to avoid this for about one month after surgery.
You can go about your daily life, but it is especially good to be careful for at least one week.

Also, alcohol and smoking can delay wound healing and increase the chance of inflammation, so we recommend avoiding alcohol and smoking for at least 2 weeks after chin surgery.
Can you receive dental treatment after chin surgery?

The area where the chin implant surgery is performed has no direct relation to the teeth, so dental treatment is possible.

However, if you let the dentist know in advance that you had chin surgery, the treatment will be carried out while avoiding that area.
Do you have to visit the hospital after surgery?

It is not absolutely necessary to visit the hospital after chin surgery.
The purpose of a hospital visit is mainly two things.
① Postoperative care

The tape can be removed by yourself after a certain period of time.

The intraoral stitches use dissolvable thread, so they are naturally absorbed over time.

However, if it has been about 2 weeks after surgery and the stitches are uncomfortable, you can visit the hospital and have them removed.
② Progress check
Some people also visit about 1 month and 6 months after surgery to check the progress.

If the wound is healing well and there are no issues with the shape, you do not necessarily need to visit.
However, because this is a surgery involving a chin implant,
even if it is not immediately after surgery,

if you experience changes in shape, pain, discomfort, or a feeling of asymmetry, it is best to visit the hospital at any time and get it checked.
Recovery after chin surgery varies from person to person, but in most cases, people can return to daily life without major discomfort in about 1 to 2 weeks.
However, since some time is needed for the chin implant to settle stably, it is important to avoid excessive irritation during the early period.
Today, we went over the precautions after chin surgery and the recovery period for a chin implant.
Chin surgery is a relatively quick recovery procedure, but because early care is important, it is essential to follow instructions such as keeping the tape on, managing gargling, and maintaining good daily habits.
Since the chin implant needs time to settle stably after surgery, most people recover well as long as they avoid excessive irritation or pressure during the early stage.
