Hongdae Dermatology Clinic: Laser Treatment for Melasma and Dark Spots, and How to Tell Them Apart

Hello, this is Jfeel Clinic,
which pursues the most beautiful feeling><
As summer approaches, the season of strong UV rays,
more and more people are visiting us with concerns about skin pigmentation.

In particular, many people feel stressed about 'melasma, freckles, and dark spots.'
To solve skin concerns,
an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment are essential first.
Today, I’ll explain common types of skin pigmentation and
their treatment methods with real photo cases✨

Melasma, freckles, dark spots!
These three are not all the same.
First, what are 'dark spots'?
Dark spots are a broad category that includes lentigines, freckles, age spots, moles, and more.
Melasma should be understood as a separate concept.

💡 What is the difference between lentigines and age spots?
Lentigines: Caused by UV damage, appear across the skin, and give the skin a thinner-looking impression.
Age spots: Characterized by clearer borders than lentigines and a slightly raised appearance!

💡 How are Ota nevus and Ota-like nevus different?
Ota nevus: Congenital and tends to appear on only one side.
It is a broadly spread bluish pigmentation and is difficult to treat.

Ota-like nevus: Appears after the 20s, is bilateral, round, and has clear borders.
The treatment period is long, but recurrence is uncommon, so it improves with consistent treatment.
Introduction to skin pigmentation conditions by type

📌 Case 1: Solar lentigines (+light melasma)
This type shows scattered solar lentigines across the skin
and light melasma.
✔️ Recommended treatment: Nd:YAG Pico Toning (532nm)
✔️ Treatment prognosis: Relatively favorable,
and improves quickly with consistent care.

📌 Case 2: Typical melasma
Melasma has unclear borders and spreads broadly like watercolor.
It is a type that requires very careful management, and consistent treatment is essential.
✔️ Recommended treatment: Treated with Pico Toning + Genesis laser,
and using vitamin C care together can be even more effective.
Melasma should be approached as a condition to be managed!
Why should IPL not be used for melasma?
IPL uses strong light to stimulate melanocytes,
which can make melasma darker or increase the chance of recurrence.
For melasma treatment, Pico Toning or Genesis is safer than IPL!

📌 Case 4: Combined type (freckles & vascular lesion) Ota-like nevus
This is a type in which freckles are mixed with vascular lesions.
✔️ Recommended treatment: IPL
It addresses vascular lesions and pigmentation at the same time,
helping to leave the skin tone cleaner and clearer.
✔️ Number of treatment sessions: Adjusted to about 2–3 sessions depending on the strength and extent of the lesion.

Things to remember when treating skin pigmentation!
Rather than a clinic that promises dramatic results in one treatment,
choose a clinic that gives accurate and honest diagnoses.
Removal of melasma and dark spots, and skin pigmentation treatment,
are most importantly about proper diagnosis and consistent care.
The results of all procedures may vary depending on an individual’s skin condition and treatment design.
