If you’re interested in skin care, you’ve probably heard of Ulthera at least once.

Since the new model, Ulthera Prime, was introduced, we’ve received a lot of requests to compare the two.

We also start by explaining the differences from the original Ulthera before treatment after introducing Ulthera Prime. ^^;

Since we’ve been telling so many people about it in the consultation room, I thought it would be nice to write it all down.

So today, I’ll take a detailed look at what exactly has changed between Ulthera and Ulthera Prime, and what those differences may mean.

First, the core of Ulthera is a technology called MFU-V (Micro-focused Ultrasound with real-time Visualization).

In simpler terms, it means 'using ultrasound imaging to see inside the skin in real time and deliver energy to the exact target area.'

Of course, the technology in the original Ulthera was already excellent, but there was one drawback.

Because it could only check up to a depth of 4.5 mm inside the skin, it was sometimes difficult to properly assess the skin layers in people with thicker skin or a fairly large amount of fat tissue.

Ulthera Prime can now visualize the skin structure down to a maximum depth of 8 mm, and the screen is 35% larger with much clearer resolution.

Because it allows direct visual confirmation of deeper layers that could not be seen with 4.5 mm imaging, energy can now be delivered to the exact target location rather than estimated areas.

The ability to distinguish skin nerves, blood vessels, fat, and muscles more clearly also improves safety, and being able to deliver energy only where it is truly needed is a major change.

Ulthera Prime comes with a large 19-inch monitor, and its upgraded hardware has significantly reduced the time needed for screen changes and data loading.

In the past, the screen would sometimes freeze or become slow, but Prime operates much more smoothly.

You may understand that this is good for the practitioner, but wonder how it helps you as the patient.

Because the practitioner can stay focused and proceed more quickly, the procedure takes less time and becomes more accurate.

Ulthera Prime also includes an added 3D visualization function.

The original Ulthera only showed 2D ultrasound images, meaning only cross-sections.

Now that 3D viewing is possible, the skin can be analyzed from multiple angles, almost like a CT scan, making it much easier to plan in greater detail which direction to treat and how much energy to deliver.

Ulthera Prime Differences Less pain

Above all else, Ulthera’s biggest weakness is pain.

Pain is inevitable in the process of delivering high-intensity ultrasound to the SMAS layer, and areas close to bone, such as the jawline and cheekbones, can be especially painful.

However, Ulthera Prime has made meaningful progress in terms of pain as well.

This is thanks to the built-in SPT (Smart Pulse Technology), a micro-energy control technology.

Simply put, you can think of it as a 'softer and more consistent energy delivery' method.

If the original Ulthera was like hitting hard with one big 'bang!', Prime is more like delivering energy in several smaller 'tap-tap-tap' pulses.

So even if the total amount of energy is the same, the delivery method is different, which changes how much pain you feel.

Of course, it is not completely painless, but many people say it feels much more comfortable than before.

Today, we took a detailed look at the Ulthera vs. Ulthera Prime differences that people considering Ulthera are most curious about.

Compared with Ulthera, Ulthera Prime is certainly better in several ways, but one thing remains unchanged: for both devices, the practitioner’s anatomical knowledge and clinical experience are still very important.

Just as having a better camera does not mean someone who cannot take photos will suddenly take good photos, better equipment alone does not guarantee better results.
