"I’m thinking about getting a lifting treatment,
Thermage or Ultherapy? How is it?
When I had laser hair removal before,
it was manageable, so this should be similar, right?"
When people ask questions about lifting, some mention their experience with hair removal or toning.
They probably say this because they think the devices and procedures used at clinics are all basically the same.
But there is one big misunderstanding hidden here. Some types of lifting use lasers, but others do not.
So today, we will look at the principles, energy used, and effects of Thermage and Ultherapy, which are almost synonymous with lifting, and also explain why they are often confused with lasers.

RF - How Thermage works and what it does
Thermage is a lifting procedure that delivers radiofrequency energy to the skin.

It stimulates collagen by applying heat evenly throughout the dermis.
To explain the principle more specifically, as radiofrequency energy passes through the skin tissue, it encounters the tissue’s resistance.
As a result, electrical energy is converted into heat, and this heat is delivered deep into the dermis.

Collagen fibers that are heated contract immediately, giving the skin a firmer feeling, and new collagen is gradually produced over the course of several weeks to several months afterward.

The most important effect Thermage can provide is "tightening."
It is effective when you are concerned about overall skin elasticity and texture, or when fine lines are bothering you.

HIFU - How Ultherapy works and what it does
Ultherapy is a lifting procedure that uses HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound).

The principle is to concentrate ultrasound at a single point, generating strong heat only at a specific depth inside the skin.
At the point where the ultrasound is focused, heat of about 60 to 70°C is momentarily created, forming a thermal coagulation point, and in this process the tissue contracts and collagen regeneration occurs.

The main effect you can expect from Ultherapy is "lifting."
This means it has an upward direction, pulling sagging skin back up.
It is effective for improving the overall facial contour, such as when the jawline has lost definition, the cheeks have sagged significantly, you are concerned about a double chin, or there are deep nasolabial folds.
That is why Ultherapy is a good fit when skin sagging is clearly visible or when the facial fat layer is thick.

Thermage and Ultherapy ≠ Laser
As explained above, Thermage and Ultherapy do not use laser energy.
Thermage uses radiofrequency (RF), and Ultherapy uses ultrasound (HIFU).
Lasers use "light," that is, beam energy, and are mainly used in spot removal or toning procedures that treat skin pigmentation issues.

But even though the differences are so clear, we looked into why they are often confused with laser energy.
It may be because they feel similar as procedures that use medical equipment at a clinic, and the word "laser," which is familiar to the public, has become established as a marketing term.
So it would be good to remember the correct terms: Thermage = RF lifting, Ultherapy = ultrasound lifting.
Today, we looked at Thermage and Ultherapy among Yeongdeungpo lifting treatments, and also addressed why these two are often confused with laser procedures.
Because laser procedures are so well known, there are quite a few cases where these lifting treatments are mixed in with laser in advertisements and marketing.
Rather than assuming that all clinic treatments are similar, we recommend learning accurately about the procedure since it is something you will receive for your own skin.
Because the skin layers affected and the results vary clearly depending on the type of energy used, it would be best to receive treatment at a place that carefully analyzes your skin condition and provides a customized plan so you can get what your skin needs.
