Yeongdeungpo Laser Toning,
How Is Melasma That Developed After Childbirth Treated?
Hello. This is U&I Clinic Yeongdeungpo.
"After giving birth, my melasma got much worse..
Will it disappear if I get laser treatment?"
Many people say that new melasma appeared after childbirth or that existing melasma suddenly became much darker.
Hormonal changes occur significantly throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
As a result, many people worry about how to get rid of the melasma and blemishes that developed during this process.
The person I am introducing today was also in a similar situation.
She was a woman in her early 30s who visited us for pigmentation treatment. After childbirth, blemishes and melasma that she had not had before had appeared all at once.
It was also her first time visiting a dermatology clinic, so she was very concerned about whether the treatment would be effective.
If you have been wondering how to treat melasma that suddenly developed after childbirth, today’s case may be helpful to review.

What was her condition before treatment?
This is a skin analysis photo taken when she first visited us.
Her pigmentation was not limited to one type. Superficial blemishes and deeper melasma were present together.

Before Yeongdeungpo laser toning treatment
This is called mixed-type pigmentation. In addition, her skin was very dry and her skin barrier had also been compromised.
There is a reason why this combination can be difficult to treat.
Superficial and deep pigmentation are located at different depths. Therefore, it can be difficult to address both at the same time by repeatedly using only one type of laser.
Also, when the skin barrier is compromised, the skin can react more sensitively, so we had to proceed carefully.

How was her post-childbirth melasma treated?
Her treatment was based on dual toning.
Dual toning is a toning method that uses two different lasers. In her case, Pico Toning and Genesis were used together.

PicoSure, the Pico Toning device used at Yeongdeungpo
Pico Toning delivers energy in an extremely short burst to break down pigmentation,
while Genesis delivers heat broadly and gently into the skin to induce collagen regeneration and strengthen the skin barrier.
There is also research that has examined this toning approach.

For people whose pigmentation had changed only slowly after several sessions of Pico Toning alone, using the two treatments together reportedly resulted in a clearly greater reduction in their melasma scores than before.

Depending on her skin condition, we also used Pico Toning and Clarity’s crusting mode.

Rather than repeating the same treatment at every session, we used combinations that were more appropriate for her skin condition.
The intervals were also scheduled closely at two-week intervals for the first 10 sessions, then extended to one-month intervals for the following 10 sessions.

How did her skin change after treatment?
She received a total of 20 treatment sessions.
After the first few sessions, the superficial blemishes became lighter first. By the middle of the treatment period, they had improved enough to be covered with makeup, and she was pleased with the results.

Around the 10th session, much of the epidermal pigmentation had improved, but the deeper melasma and overall skin tone still needed more time.
So we extended the treatment and continued.
At the 20th session, the intervals were extended, and treatment is now being continued for maintenance, with the goal of suppressing and managing further recurrence of melasma.

After Yeongdeungpo laser toning treatment
There is something important to note here.
The superficial and deep pigmentation improved at different rates. The blemishes responded relatively quickly, while the melasma took much longer.
However, there is something I would like to say honestly.
Melasma is closer to an ongoing management process than a treatment with a definitive endpoint.
She has continued treatment for 18 months, and it is not completely finished even now; the intervals have simply been extended for maintenance.
This is because melasma can reappear if conditions such as hormones and ultraviolet exposure remain unchanged.
Therefore, rather than simply completing a set number of sessions, it is important to keep checking how far the treatment has progressed and what needs to be done at each stage.
Today, I shared a case in which mixed-type pigmentation that developed after childbirth was managed over 20 sessions with Yeongdeungpo laser toning.

Before and after Yeongdeungpo laser toning treatment
You may have often heard that melasma takes a long time to treat, but more precisely, the required time varies depending on how deep your pigmentation is located.
It is natural to feel anxious about pigmentation that suddenly appears after childbirth, but melasma is closer to something that is managed over the long term than something that can be finished in a single treatment.
For that reason, rather than focusing on how quickly it can be removed, it is often more useful to first understand how deep your pigmentation is.
Knowing its depth helps clarify the next steps and can also ease some of the impatience you may feel.
If you have similar concerns, we recommend first checking whether your pigmentation is superficial, deep, or a combination of both.
