In this answer note, a reader asked because they felt anxious after discharge came out of the nose following rhinoplasty.

Today, let’s talk about that.

Q. I had nose surgery with septal cartilage, ear cartilage, and autologous dermis, and discharge came out.

About a month ago, I had nose surgery using septal cartilage, ear cartilage, and autologous dermis from the buttock.

Since the surgery, I’ve been trying not to touch my nose, and if I do need to touch it, I do so very carefully.

But some discharge that looked like a booger seemed to come out of my nose, so I lightly scraped it out with my fingernail. It seemed a little unclear, though, and the color looked different from what I’d expect from a booger.

Just in case, I shined the camera flash into my nose and saw that there was still a lot of discharge inside.

Seeing that made me worry that maybe it wasn’t a booger, but rather the cartilage or autologous dermis used during the surgery.

The discharge is gathered at the tip of my nose, and I’m wondering whether I scraped out the ear cartilage, septal cartilage, or even the autologous dermis that was inserted into my nose... Or is it even possible for something like an implant to come out through the nostril?

I want to go to the hospital, but today happens to be Sunday..

Also, if this were due to a mistake on the hospital’s part, I’m worried they might just dismiss it as nothing and brush it off, so I’m asking here first because I have some unnecessary doubts.

First of all, once a month has passed after surgery, there is little chance that the cartilage and autologous dermis used during the operation will come out.

If cartilage or autologous dermis were to come out, there would likely have been several factors involved.

For example, the wound may not have healed for a month, inflammation may have continued so that the wound remained open, or the scab or wound may have been scraped hard enough to reopen a healing wound—but if it had been scraped that hard, there would likely have been bleeding.

So I think the discharge you noticed was probably a mixture of crusts and mucus inside the nose.

However, I can’t say for certain, so if you are feeling very anxious, it would be best to visit the hospital where you had the surgery and have your current condition examined.
