Hello. I’m Kim Hyeong-taek, CEO and chief surgeon of Kowon Plastic Surgery, who pursues healthy beauty.
Today, I answered a question about what kinds of nasal incision methods are used in nose surgery and whether the nostril shape changes depending on the method.

Q. Does the nostril shape change depending on the nasal incision method?
While looking into hospitals to learn about nose surgery, I noticed that the nasal incision methods are slightly different from place to place.
It seems there are broadly two methods: one that makes an incision only along the lower part of the nostril, and another that extends the incision from the bottom toward the side. Is that correct?
Also, depending on the nasal incision method, the nostril shape after surgery seems slightly different. Am I right that it really does differ as I think?
In method 1, since only the lower part is incised and then sutured, it seems the flesh gathers roundly toward the lower side, making the nostril shape smaller in a circular form like ( ).
In method 2, since the side of the nostril is incised a little more than in method 1, when the lower and side parts are cut and then sutured, it seems to create a more elongated nostril shape than method 1...
It seems many hospitals use method 2.
Right now, my nostrils feel quite round, so I think a slimmer nostril shape would be better.
That is why I want method 2, but if there is not much difference from method 1, I’m planning to have surgery with method 1, which has a shorter incision line.
I would appreciate answers from the specialists..!

Before surgery, I think it is a very good attitude to make sure exactly what operation you will be receiving.
If you fully understand the surgical method and can predict the results in advance, you may be able to avoid regret after surgery or disappointment over unexpected results.
The method 1 nasal incision mentioned by the questioner seems to be more about reducing the width of the nose rather than reducing the nostrils.
(It may be about reducing the tissue between the nostril and the columella.)
Since method 1 does not bring about a major change, it is not commonly used to reduce the nostrils.
There are several ways to reduce the alar rim or to reduce a wide nose.
Among them, method 2 is the most commonly used; it reduces the alar rim itself and creates the effect of making the nose appear more gathered, but this method has the drawback of leaving a scar on the outside of the alar rim.
If the alar rim itself is not large and the width of the nose is wide from side to side, the tissue at the base of the nose between the alar rim and the columella is also reduced through nostril-width reduction (method 1).
There is also a method of bringing both alar rims together with sutures, and in cases where the alar rim is drooping, there is a method of lifting it toward the eyes.
In other words, the exact answer can be determined only by looking at the current shape of the questioner’s nose and deciding which method should be used for surgery.
After researching nose surgery extensively, I recommend identifying exactly what you want to improve before undergoing the procedure.
I hope you get a good result.
Thank you.
