Why Has My Skin Dryness Gotten So Severe? (feat. PN vs. HA)

Recently, the most common concern I hear in the clinic is:

"My skin feels like it’s going to crack. No matter what I put on, it’s still dry."

Why does skin seem to get even drier even when you use so many products that are said to be good?

This is because winter’s dry air and heating, large temperature differences between day and night, wearing masks, and excessive skincare routines where multiple products are applied at once all make the skin barrier more sensitive and reduce the dermis’ ability to retain moisture.

At times like this, I recommend Rejuran (PN, polynucleotide) and water glow injections (HA, hyaluronic acid).

Both can help improve skin dryness, but the way each works is slightly different.

Polynucleotide vs. Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is specialized for immediate moisture increase

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has the ability to attract 1,000 times its own weight in moisture.

So right after the procedure, the skin can feel more hydrated and plump, and dryness may improve.

In fact, several clinical studies have reported that the moisture level of the stratum corneum improved immediately after HA filler or HA skin booster procedures. (Corneometer measurements)

Polynucleotide helps build the skin’s own ability to retain moisture

Polynucleotide (PN) does more than simply provide moisture.

It regenerates the dermis,

increases collagen and elastin,

improves microcirculation,

and increases dermal thickness.

As a result, the skin’s original structure becomes stronger and healthier, and its ability to retain moisture increases.

Looking at a study that compared the effects of HA and PN, each used for regeneration around the eye area,

(Lee YJ et al., 2022 - randomized, double-blind, split-face trial)

one side of the face and the other side of the face were divided, and one side was treated with HA (non-crosslinked HA),

while the other side was treated with PN three times at two-week intervals.

Over time, compared with HA, the PN-treated area showed greater improvement in

skin elasticity, hydration, skin roughness, and pores.

In the early stage, HA increased hydration more quickly, but after 8 to 12 weeks, PN showed greater moisture-retention ability,

and PN was also more effective in improving dark circles, elasticity, and wrinkles.

In other words, PN can be described as a long-lasting water glow treatment that keeps getting better over time.

Then which treatment is better for dry skin?

!! For patients who want quick, immediate moisture, an HA-based skin booster is recommended.

!! For patients with long-standing skin dryness and weakened skin barrier, a PN-based skin booster is recommended.

However, in actual treatment, these two are more often used together because they complement each other.

In seasons like this, when skin becomes dry so easily, moisturizing products alone are often not enough.

Which treatment is most suitable among PN and HA depends on

the patient’s skin condition, lifestyle, and desired results,
