Is simple liposuction enough for double chin surgery?

This is Director Lee Won-won of 21 Plastic Surgery. Many people think the cause of a double chin is that it is a result of gaining weight.

So they try various methods such as dieting, contouring injections, radiofrequency procedures, and more...

But there are definitely double chins that do not go away, and for most people, a double chin does not happen because of simple fat alone!!!!

The structure of a double chin

A double chin is caused by three factors working together: fat, sagging of the skin and platysma muscle, and the submandibular gland.

Therefore, real double chin surgery is!!!

The key is to accurately identify the cause that fits the patient and design a combination treatment.

Before surgery / After surgery, side view What are the limitations if only simple liposuction is performed?

For people whose double chin is caused only by fat above the platysma, liposuction alone can produce a great effect!!!

However, if the problem is not only fat, then if only suction is performed, the submandibular gland may become more prominent, or may even appear more pronounced.

In addition, since the deep fat and platysma are not improved, only a lumpy and unsatisfactory line may remain.

Most people who undergo only liposuction come in later for revision surgery consultation because even after surgery, it looks somewhat unnatural or the jawline looks ambiguous...

So today, I will introduce the change process from an actual surgery case^^

Before surgery, front/side view

This patient is a woman in her early 30s. She had double chin liposuction several years ago, but the effect was minimal and it quickly returned to how it was before, so while looking for a clinic for double chin treatment, she came to our hospital^^

When I examined the patient directly in the consultation room, I could see that subcutaneous fat was distributed to some extent under the chin, and that the submandibular gland was also enlarged.

Surgical plan

lipo (double chin re) + muscle tightening

• submandibular gland suturing + skin excision (under the chin)

1 week later, front/side view

One week has passed since the surgery.

Bruising has spread along both jawlines and the neck area, but only yellowish bruising remains, so the swelling and bruising should subside soon^^

Looking at the side view, because of the swelling it is not yet a clear right-angled line, but the bulge under the chin has disappeared and the line looks more refined^^

2 months later, front/side view

After 2 months, the bruising and swelling have mostly subsided. The jawline is much more defined than before, and the submandibular gland is also well refined, so overall it seems to be a highly complete result.^^

3 months later, front/side view

This is the final 3-month point. From both the front and side angles, you can see that the jawline flows naturally and is maintained firmly without skin sagging. The patient also said that her friends asked whether she had succeeded at dieting, and that they were shocked when she said she had surgery, which made me happy as well^^

In double chin surgery, liposuction is one method, but it is not the answer!!!

Simply suctioning the protruding area alone does not create the ideal jawline we want, and an anatomically customized design suited to each individual is necessary.

Do not forget that a double chin that cannot be solved simply can arise from various factors such as skin elasticity, muscles, and protruding salivary glands!!!!!
