Is It Normal for the Skin Under the Chin to Fold After Double-Chin Surgery?

Anyone would feel their heart sink if, while looking in the mirror after surgery, they noticed that the skin under their chin was wrinkled or folded like steps.

I fully understand how you feel...

But let me give you the conclusion first.

This does not mean the surgery was unsuccessful.

Rather, it is a natural part of the healing process that appears when the volume has been definitively reduced, including in the deeper layers.

This is how the double-chin surgery I perform is different.

Not every double chin is treated using the same method.

If the double chin consists primarily of superficial fat, liposuction alone can produce sufficient improvement.

However, for people whose muscles themselves have become lax or who have deeply located internal fat, the “muscle tightening” procedure that I perform personally is necessary.

The surgical process is as follows.

After removing the superficial fat, I carefully remove the deep internal fat located inside the platysma.

This reveals the enlarged digastric muscles. After appropriately reducing these muscles, I firmly secure the fascia on both sides and also tidy up the salivary glands.

The core of this surgery is fundamentally emptying and reducing the space that had been filled beneath the chin.

Then why do these step-like folds appear?

This is where an important point comes in.

The volume inside the chin has decreased significantly, but the skin that covered it remains the same.

Of course, some of the excess skin is removed, but skin is like stretchy clothing, so when the contents underneath disappear, it can temporarily become wrinkled or folded.

It may look especially pronounced when you lower your chin, but this does not mean that the tissue has been pinched. It is the process of the remaining skin settling into place so that it can adhere closely to the jawbone line.

As this empty space becomes attached, the folds gradually smooth out.

Let me show you the actual progress.

If you look at a case I performed personally, it will be much easier to understand.

At 1 month after surgery, the line under the chin is not yet smooth, and a step-like difference in level can be seen.

The patient was also very worried at that time.

However, as time passed, the folded areas gradually smoothed out and adhered closely to the jawbone line.

Once the feeling of being forcibly pulled disappeared, the sharp L-shaped line we had hoped for was finally completed.

The healing capacity of our bodies is truly remarkable—more than we might expect.

However, there is one thing I would like to strongly emphasize during this recovery period.

Do not repeatedly touch or pinch the area just because you feel anxious.

If you irritate the area while the tissue is supposed to be healing and adhering properly, scar tissue may form instead.

When you start to feel anxious, step away from the mirror for a while and believe that “my jawline is settling into place so that it can become even more beautiful.”

Enduring that period well is also part of the surgery.

I believe that cosmetic surgery does not end on the operating table.

It is a process that is completed by going through the recovery period together.
