Do teeth have to be extracted during orthodontic treatment?

Among people considering orthodontic treatment, many want to avoid tooth extraction. Just a quick search online will show that.

From the patient’s point of view, if the teeth are perfectly fine and usable.. It makes sense to wonder, “Do I really need to extract them?”

It would be nice if orthodontics could be done without extracting teeth, but in some cases, extraction is unavoidable.

In this post, I’ll explain why extractions are needed during orthodontic treatment and when they are necessary.

1. Why is extraction needed?

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to straighten the alignment of the teeth.

Aesthetic improvement comes naturally as a result, but in fact, the treatment is done to improve the teeth’ original function~

When teeth are crowded or there is not enough space, extraction is needed to secure space.

2. When is extraction necessary?

The cases in which extraction is definitely necessary are as follows.

1. Lack of space

You want to improve a crooked alignment, but there isn’t enough space for the teeth~

Because there isn’t enough space, there may be impacted teeth that erupt out of position~

These days, children often have narrow jaws, so their dental arches are narrow as well.

2. Improving a protruding mouth

This is often called a “pouty mouth.”

In cases where the mouth sticks out prominently, extraction can be used to move the teeth backward and improve the mouth shape.

Of course, treatment can also be planned without extraction, but in that case, the protrusion may not improve as much as desired.

Because protruding mouths are often treated for aesthetic reasons, orthodontic treatment without extraction may be disappointing once treatment is finished!!

3. When is extraction not absolutely necessary?

Not all orthodontic treatments require extraction. In the following cases, non-extraction orthodontic treatment may be possible!!

If space can be secured by extracting wisdom teeth, if there is enough room for tooth alignment, if jaw growth and development are favorable, for mild protrusion or mild alignment problems

In the case of wisdom teeth, teeth do need to be extracted before orthodontic treatment, but they are not counted as part of the natural set of teeth.

Since they often cause problems when not properly managed, they are commonly extracted when starting orthodontic treatment.

If you can have your wisdom teeth removed and avoid extracting your own teeth, many people are happy about that~

Especially these days, due to advances in orthodontic appliances and technology, the trend is to minimize extraction.

Whether extraction is necessary should be decided by comprehensively considering the patient’s dental condition, skeletal structure, and bite condition~
