Hello~
I’m Lee Ju-ri, the chief director of Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic.
Director, will orthodontics hurt??
Does it hurt a lot??
These are among the most common questions asked by people who are starting orthodontic treatment~
After all, pain is something everyone wants to avoid,
and because they have never experienced it, it feels frightening and scary~
Especially the preconception that dental treatment hurts!
seems to make it even more intimidating.
How much pain is there in Gil-dong dental orthodontics if you haven't experienced it?
Today, I’ll explain why pain occurs during orthodontic treatment
and how it can be eased~~

Orthodontic pain is natural and temporary!!
If treatment lasts from as short as 6 months to as long as 2 to 3 years,
having pain throughout the entire orthodontic journey
would be far from easy.
We eat every day, after all!!
Pain is a natural part that can 충분히 occur during orthodontic treatment,
and it is temporary!!!!

The journey of bringing teeth that were biting in the wrong direction back into place!
Orthodontic treatment is like a growth spurt for aligning the teeth evenly~~
Even when we are growing and getting taller rapidly,
our knees hurt, right~
After the growth period passes, it gets better.
Why does orthodontic pain happen??
It can hurt because teeth that are still are being moved!
The principle of orthodontic treatment is to apply a certain force to the tooth roots.
As this force is transmitted to the tissues and bone around the teeth,
it causes pain.
Especially when someone has never had orthodontics before
(after first wearing braces)
or when the wire is replaced
or after a new clear aligner is inserted.
This mainly happens during the process of the teeth moving to a new position~
Second, if orthodontic appliances are attached,
brushing may not be done well, the gums may swell, and that can also hurt.

This is why we tell patients to brush diligently when first starting orthodontic treatment!!
Third, because the teeth become more sensitive as they move,
you may feel discomfort when consuming cold or hot foods.
Fourth, irritation inside the mouth
When you wear new shoes, your heels can get rubbed raw,
and you need time to get used to them, right~
Orthodontic brackets or
clear aligners can injure the soft tissue inside the mouth
such as the gums or the inside of the cheeks,
and also the lips,
causing pain.
Especially when orthodontic treatment is first started,
these discomforts are more noticeable.
Being in pain is a sign that orthodontic treatment is going well.
Just as height grows rapidly after a growth spurt,
if you feel pain during Gil-dong orthodontic treatment,
you can think of it as the teeth moving into the next stage.

If the front teeth that did not bite before need to touch, a lot of movement is required, so pain may occur!
Pain is felt differently from person to person,
but feeling nothing at all is not a good sign eitherㅠㅠ
It could mean the teeth are not moving at all and are staying still,
so when you visit the clinic, we check the degree of movement for you!!!
How to deal with orthodontic pain!!
If the pain is severe after changing the wire
or after putting in a new clear aligner,
it is effective to take a pain reliever.
In most cases, it eases after about a week,
but if the pain continues, please contact the clinic!!
Second, keep cold water in your mouth
When it hurts too much, temporarily keeping cold water in your mouth can also help!
When cold water is taken in temporarily,
the pain may be relieved,
and the wire used in orthodontic appliances has a function that adjusts its elasticity depending on the temperature~
So holding cold water in your mouth reduces pain!
Third, eat soft foods
If you eat hard or chewy foods,
the pain may get worse, so please eat soft foods such as porridge or smoothies!!
This helps reduce the burden on the teeth and gums~

We provide white wax!
Fourth, use orthodontic wax
If orthodontic appliances are poking the inside of the mouth or have caused a wound inside the mouth,
the clinic will provide orthodontic wax!
Attach it to the appliance to reduce pain until the wound heals.

For the pain expected during Gil-dong orthodontic treatment,
we provide enough consultation and explanation.
Today, because force is being applied to the teeth,
it may hurt a little~~
For 1–2 days, eat soft foods,
and take a pain reliever when it hurts too much~
If it really hurts a lot, call the dental clinic!!
There is a difference between predictable pain
and pain you were not prepared for!
Also, during Gil-dong orthodontic treatment, we avoid unnecessary pain by not applying excessive force. (Very important!!)
If you work together with the clinic and handle it appropriately,
you can reduce pain and successfully complete orthodontic treatment.
It is a long period of time.
As we manage the pain appropriately,
We were already pretty today,
but shall we become even more beautiful tomorrow~??
Thank you!!
