안녕하세요~
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Director, I got another oral ulcer...
One of the things that troubles patients during orthodontic treatment is probably oral ulcers.
When an oral ulcer develops, even drinking water can be difficult,
and it can ache and throb.
Why Does Oral Ulcers Occur During Orthodontic Treatment?
In this post, we’ll look at the causes of oral ulcers during orthodontic treatment and
effective ways to deal with them.
What Are Oral Ulcers?
They’re commonly called mouth sores.

When an oral ulcer develops, you can see a white blister-like spot,
and the inside of the mouth feels stinging or burning,
making it very painful to eat.
Oral ulcers can also appear when you are tired or your immunity is lowered,
but you can see them occurring easily during orthodontic treatment.
Causes of Oral Ulcers During Orthodontic Treatment
First, physical irritation from orthodontic appliances
Brackets, wires, and other things attached to the teeth
can come into contact with the oral mucosa,
that is, the soft tissue inside the mouth, causing continuous friction
and leading to wounds.

Since the lips, cheeks, and tongue are soft tissues,
if they keep rubbing against something, wounds can easily form.
Especially right after braces are first attached,
the irritation can be severe while the mouth is adjusting.

The gums are being pressed, so brushing is difficult, right?
Second, difficulty managing oral hygiene
Because orthodontic appliances cover the tooth surface,
toothbrushing becomes difficult.
Food also tends to get stuck in and around the appliances,
creating a good environment for bacteria to grow.
The gums can also swell easily.
Because of this, the mucosa becomes more sensitive,
and even small stimuli can easily cause oral ulcers.
Third, weakened immunity and nutritional imbalance
During orthodontic treatment, when appliances are changed,
the teeth can feel pain,
and if you are unable to eat properly,
your immunity may drop.
What Should You Do When an Oral Ulcer Develops?
If an oral ulcer develops during orthodontic treatment,
the problem is that the orthodontic appliance keeps irritating the sore area!
It must hurt a lot, right~?
First, use wax.

The clinic provides wax in preparation for situations like this!
If you cut a small piece of this wax
and place it on the orthodontic appliance near the sore area,
it can reduce friction.
It will cause less irritation inside the mouth.
Second, maintain thorough oral hygiene
For the sore to heal quickly,
it is important to create a clean oral environment.
Be sure to brush your teeth after meals.

Third, vitamin intake is essential!
Even if your immunity is weakened,
you can more easily get hurt by small irritations.
Please eat fresh vegetables and fruits!
Fourth, get help from oral ulcer ointment!
These days, oral ulcer rinses and ointments are readily available.
Because they contain ingredients that help heal wounds,
if you buy and use them at a pharmacy,
you can recover more quickly!
Fifth, avoid irritating foods
Spicy or hot foods irritate the mucosa!
They can worsen oral ulcers,
so please avoid them.
The most important thing is....
Orthodontic appliance checkups and a visit to the dentist!!
If the orthodontic appliance is too sharp or uncomfortable,
it is best to visit the dental clinic for an adjustment.
If the appliance is severely poking the inside of the mouth,
the wire can be trimmed or its position adjusted to reduce discomfort.
Today’s Summary
Oral ulcers can commonly occur during orthodontic treatment.
Getting properly aligned teeth is really not easy, is it~?
The orthodontic process can be uncomfortable,
but for a beautiful smile!!!
Let’s hang in there just a little longer~~!!
Cheering you on.
