Hello,
This is Director Yoon Tae-ho of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Once the tension from implant surgery eases,
the next question is usually: when do we remove the stitches?
When you touch them with your tongue, they often feel rougher than expected,
and they can even cause sores on the tongue.
You should avoid stimulating the surgical site as much as possible,
but human nature makes us keep running our tongue over uncomfortable areas~
When do you remove implant sutures? They feel rough.
You may also wonder whether it hurts when they are removed.
Today, I’ll organize the various questions related to implant sutures
in an easy-to-understand way.

Why are implant sutures so stiff?
Implant surgery involves making an incision in the gums.
During this process, the incised gum is closed and stitched with thread.
This is what we commonly call "stitches."
Of course, in some cases the surgery is performed without incising the gums,
but that does not apply to every patient.
In any case, there are people who feel the texture of the sutures especially uncomfortable after implant surgery.

The thread used during surgery is nylon.
It is a different type from the thread used for ordinary tooth extractions.
Because the surface is smooth and firm,
there is less friction as it passes through tissue and a lower risk of infection.
Also, food particles are less likely to stick to the surface of the thread,
so it is easier to manage hygienically.
It has the advantage of being stiff and securing the gum well,
but the downside is that it feels rough.

When are the stitches removed?
Many people want them removed as soon as possible
because of the rough feeling.
In general, stitches are removed 7 to 10 days after implant surgery.
However, depending on an individual’s healing speed, gum condition,
and the location or difficulty of the surgical site,
they may be removed a little earlier or later.
People who smoke or who have systemic conditions such as diabetes
may heal more slowly, so stitch removal may also be delayed.

The second concern
Does it hurt when the stitches are removed??
This is something many people worry about.
Removal itself is relatively simple.
Most patients describe it as "a little stingy."
There is no need for anesthesia.
If the incised area has healed well,
there is no special pain during stitch removal.
However, if the gums are swollen or inflamed,
there may be pain.
(You may also carefully brush the surgical area to help prevent inflammation!)
Although stitch removal may seem like a simple process,
it is one of the important treatments that can check the direction of healing and whether there is any infection.
It may feel rough and uncomfortable for now,
but please try to keep your tongue away as much as possible!!!
It is part of the recovery process.
If there is anything unusual,
please consult your dentist thoroughly.
