Hello~
I’m Dr. Lee Ju-ri from Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic, here to share useful dental information with patients. ^^
In dental treatment, “time” is a very important factor from the patient’s perspective.
If you are an office worker, you may need to take a day off,
and if you are a caregiver looking after a child, having to visit the hospital multiple times
can be inconvenient.
When you are recommended an inlay at the dentist,
some clinics say it can be finished in one day..
while others say it takes about 5–7 days,
so from the patient’s perspective, it can be confusing to wonder what is different.
Can interproximal decay be finished in one day with a one-day inlay?
Today, I’ll explain what a one-day inlay is,
the usual process of inlay treatment,
why it usually takes 5–7 days,
and how treatment can be completed in just one day.
I hope this information will be helpful to patients.
What Is an Inlay?

An inlay is a treatment method used when decay has spread deeply and widely,
but root canal treatment is not yet necessary,
or when decay occurs between teeth.
After removing the damaged part of the tooth,
it is restored with an artificial material.
In the past, gold was often used as the artificial material,
but recently, white materials have been preferred for aesthetic reasons.
The traditional inlay treatment process is as follows.
It required about two visits.
At the first visit, after local anesthesia, the decay is removed,
the tooth is shaped, and an impression is taken.

The shape of the inlay differs depending on the extent of the decay.
Once the impression has been taken according to the shape,
it is sent to a dental lab where the restoration is fabricated.
The finished inlay is then delivered back to the clinic,
so it can be bonded to the patient,
which is why patients usually return after 5–7 days.
Working with an outside dental lab is what typically takes time.
If the lab’s production schedule,
shipping time, weekends, or holidays overlap, it may take even longer.

But can a one-day inlay really be done in just one day?
A “one-day inlay” literally means a system in which both inlay fabrication and placement are completed within a single day.
It can be helpful for busy patients.
The reason it can be possible is that it requires a dental lab inside the clinic.
This eliminates the time spent going back and forth to an outside lab,
because the restoration is made right at the clinic.

The clinic also needs a machine that makes the inlay,
an experienced dental technician on site,
and equipment such as an oral scanner.
So yes, interproximal decay can be finished in one day with a one-day inlay.
Some clinics say that time is needed,
and clinics that say it can be completed in one day are not necessarily wrong.
The time required for inlay treatment can vary by clinic,
and the difference largely depends on whether the clinic has an internal dental lab.

Since not every clinic offers one-day inlays,
it is a good idea to ask in advance before visiting.
I hope this was helpful,
and I’ll end the post here.
Thank you!
