These days, implant procedures have become much more common, so it’s not difficult to see people around you who have undergone surgery.

Regardless of age or gender, you can find at least one person around you who has had it.

As medical technology has advanced, implants have become much safer and more predictable than in the past,

but all surgeries still carry some possibility of side effects.

Today, for those considering implants, I’ll explain the side effects you should definitely know about and how to prevent them.

1. During placement
2. Immediately after surgery
3. During the healing period

These are the implant surgery side effects that can arise during the three stages.

Problems that can occur during placement

Implant treatment is a surgery in which an implant that replaces the tooth root is placed into the bone.

For that reason, it must be placed safely while avoiding nearby anatomical structures.

For example.. If the inferior alveolar nerve canal in the lower jaw is affected, you may feel as though the anesthesia does not wear off, and there may be changes in sensation at the tip of the chin.

In the upper jaw, if the maxillary sinus membrane is torn, inflammation can occur.

To prevent such accidents, accurate diagnosis and surgical planning are above all necessary.

These days, surgery is performed safely by carefully identifying the nerves and bone structure in advance using digital 3D CT or a navigation system.

Problems that can occur immediately after surgery

Right after an implant is placed, the three most common symptoms are pain, swelling, bleeding, and infection.

Because the gums are incised and it is surgery, these symptoms can appear temporarily.

In general, they are often manageable with prescribed medication.

Oh, and the most important thing is the patient’s cooperation.

I’m not mentioning the precautions just for the sake of it.

For a certain period after surgery, be sure to avoid alcohol and smoking, and thoroughly maintain oral hygiene, including toothbrushing and mouth rinse.

Some people brush very gently, worried that the surgical area might be damaged.

But if food debris is not removed, gingival inflammation often develops.

Problems that can occur during the healing period after surgery

This is referred to as implant osseointegration failure.

The most common side effect is "a condition in which the implant fails to attach to the bone and becomes loose."

Because implants are placed into bone, for the prosthesis to be mounted, the process in which the bone and implant firmly bond is absolutely necessary.

• Forced placement when there is insufficient gum bone
• Circulation problems caused by smoking, drinking, etc.
• Systemic diseases such as diabetes or osteoporosis
• Frequent irritation or infection at the surgical site

If osseointegration fails due to these four causes, the implant may become loose or even fall out completely.
