Hello,
I’m dentist Lee Juri.
The implant surgical area,
shouldn’t you avoid brushing it?
Many patients ask me this.
(I heard it again today...)
You may worry that brushing will irritate the surgical site,
that the stitches will burst, or that it will bleed.
So most people think they should just avoid brushing and be careful for now.
Many also just rinse with mouthwash.
That can actually invite inflammation.
How to brush after a dental implant in Godeok-dong.
If you don’t brush, it’s even more dangerous.
Today I’ll explain how to care for yourself after surgery~!

The question I hear most after surgery
“Doctor, can I brush my teeth after implant surgery?”
After implant surgery in Godeok-dong, brushing is actually essential.
Brush all teeth except the surgical area as you normally would.
(That includes areas like the palate and tongue as well.)
For the surgical area,
there will be a small incision or sutures.

If you don’t brush at this time,
food debris and bacteria will remain.
To keep food from sticking to the stitches,
we do suture with rough thread,
but if it isn’t removed, food debris and bacteria can still cling even to rough nylon thread.
This can lead to inflammation → swollen gums → pain.
Especially if debris gets caught around the healing abutment that is connected outside the gum,
that area becomes an easy place for bacteria to multiply.
Just by looking at the healing abutment when removing stitches,
I can tell whether the patient brushed or not ^^

So when, and how, should you brush?
You should brush gently starting the day after surgery.
On the day of surgery, manage it with the mouthwash we prescribed.
Starting the next day, since the wound has not yet healed,
brush the surgical area very gently with a toothbrush.
At this time, using a soft toothbrush
helps without causing irritation!
In fact, whether you brushed or not... everything can be seen.
This is when white debris is stuck and hardened on top of the healing abutment~

Even in the surgical area,
those who brush gently at least a little do not have gum inflammation.
People who brush well recover much faster and have better results.
But if you don’t brush,
your gums may swell and bleed, and you may need to visit the clinic even after stitch removal.

The implant surgical area,
are you afraid to even touch it?
I completely understand how you feel.
But if you want treatment to go well, you should not avoid brushing.
From today, don’t be afraid,
and take proper care of it the right way!
I hope this helps patients.
Thank you!!
