Redistributing the Space Between Chipped and Gapped Front Teeth with Resin.
I am Lee Ju-ri, the head dentist of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic, here to take care of our patients’ smiles.
Please help me solve the problem of food getting stuck between my teeth.
The patient I’m introducing today was also a woman in her 70s.
The gap looked unaesthetic,
and food kept getting stuck in the space,
so she said eating had become stressful.
She said it was embarrassing because she could not use a toothpick in front of other people.
Today, I’ll explain why teeth become gapped
and share the story of how we redistributed the space between the teeth with resin.

Patients’ interest in front teeth
is
regardless of gender
and
continues regardless of age.
In that sense, Koreans care a great deal about how they appear to others.
Our patient today was experiencing aesthetic stress from gapped front teeth,
and also functional discomfort.

She said food kept getting stuck between her teeth and asked us to fill it.
Looking closely, one corner was also slightly chipped.
Why do teeth become gapped?
The symptom of a gap between the front teeth is called diastema.
It can occur due to bad habits,
and when gum health worsens with age,
the jawbone is resorbed and the force holding the teeth in place weakens,
so the teeth can become gapped.
Upper labial frenum
Sometimes, when you lift your upper lip, you can see the upper labial frenum
(the part connecting the upper lip and the gums).
If this area extends down between the teeth,
it can push the front teeth apart and create a gap.
Just like in the photo.
Anyway, when the front teeth are gapped,
food keeps getting stuck, which can cause the gums to swell more,
and air passes through the space, which can also worsen pronunciation.
Treatment process for gapped front teeth with resin
There are three main ways to fill the space between the front teeth.
- Resin
- Prosthetic treatment (laminate veneer, crown)
- Orthodontic treatment
Because the patient was elderly, orthodontic treatment was not suitable,
and since the gap was not large enough to justify prosthetic treatment,
we decided to redistribute the space between the teeth with resin.

It would look like this.
The advantages of resin treatment are:
It can be completed on the same day.
The cost is lower than other treatments.
These are the two main advantages.

It also has the advantage of being esthetic.
It preserves the patient’s natural tooth color,
so it does not look artificial.
Because there is almost no tooth reduction,
damage is minimal.
(We simply add the resin and then shape and polish it.)

We filled the space between the front teeth with resin
and repaired the chipped area at the same time.
It took about 30 minutes.
Now that the space has been filled,
food should be less likely to get stuck in the future.
We filled the gap and restored the chipped area,
so the patient was able to have a much more natural-looking smile.
When the front teeth are gapped,
people often cover their mouth with their hand when they smile,
and this can lead to a drop in confidence.
If the gap is wide, filling it with resin may have limitations.
It can come off easily,
and the teeth may become too large, which can actually look less esthetic.
The treatment direction varies depending on the patient,
so
please make sure to have a thorough consultation before treatment
and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure.

To wrap up this post,
I’ll introduce one more similar case~
I hope this helped solve our patient’s concerns.
Thank you!!
