Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Why do you put in tubes that look like straws?
They turn yellow...
After receiving a patient’s question today,
I decided to write this post.
There are common wire-like tools used in orthodontic treatment,
but there are actually many different auxiliary tools.
Today, I’ll explain the clear tube that looks like a straw!

- The tube that looks like a straw is a sleeve!

A transparent, tube-shaped tool
It really does look like a cut piece of straw, right??
Today’s patient wanted this clear tube removed
because it had turned yellow from staining.
Orthodontic tube, sleeve
This auxiliary tool is called a sleeving tube.
It is placed over the wire
and acts as a protective cover for the wire.
Its main role is to protect the lips and cheeks from injury.
This is to reduce the patient’s discomfort.
As I explained last time,
orthodontic appliances are not attached to all teeth at once.
In some cases, a few teeth are left out
when attaching them.
At this time, there is space between the brackets,
which can cause the lips to get caught in the wire,
and in short, a pinching phenomenon can occur.
This can cause the lips to become sore
or even bleed,
so to prevent this kind of situation, a sleeve is placed on.

If you look at the photo, a specific tooth is positioned inward.
When attaching the bracket orthodontic appliance,
there wasn’t enough space to place the appliance,
so the braces were attached excluding this tooth.
Later, once the teeth have moved to some extent,
we plan to attach a bracket.
Until then, the sleeving tube is placed on it.

Another function is
to prevent the wire from transmitting force to the teeth.
If a tube is placed over a certain section,
the wire moves like it is sliding,
allowing us to control it so that excessive force is not applied to a specific tooth.
If you go down a slide through a tube,
there is no friction,
so you slide down as if into a swimming pool.
It works on a similar principle.

In the past, I explained that springs are used
to create space between teeth.
Unlike springs, sleeving tubes
have no function for maintaining space.
They are not devices that stop tooth movement
or maintain space,
but rather devices that provide protection.

Depending on each patient’s dental condition,
different auxiliary tools are used for orthodontic treatment^^
- Since it is plastic, it can stain
Please keep in mind that this device
can turn yellow from food during meals~
A representative example is curry.
Stained yellow
The tube is usually made of plastic or silicone.
So if you frequently consume foods with strong pigments, staining can occur.
It only looks noticeable because it appears yellow,
and it has absolutely nothing to do with treatment effectiveness.
There is no functional problem.
However, in the case of the front teeth,
it has the drawback of constantly drawing attention,
so please let us know if it bothers you.
It can be replaced at any time!
Today, I talked about the tube
that the patient was curious about.
It is an important device that protects the inside of the mouth
and adjusts orthodontic force.
I’ll introduce one interesting orthodontic device at a time next time as well.
Thank you!
