Orthodontic Aesthetic Line E-line: You Can Assess It with One Finger.
Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Doctor, I look fine from the front,
but I’m concerned about my side profile.
The idea that the face should flow smoothly even in profile
is considered a standard of beauty.
At one time, a method of simply checking whether the mouth is protrusive using just one finger
became popular.
This is the E-line test, which is often mentioned during orthodontic consultations.
Today, I’ll explain how to test it with your finger
and what this aesthetic line means.

What is the orthodontic aesthetic line (E-line)?
It is mainly used when diagnosing protrusive mouth.
A hypothetical straight line connecting the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin
is called the aesthetic line (E-line).
Using this line as a reference,
the position of the lips in front of or behind the line is assessed
to evaluate the balance of the side profile.

In simple terms,
from a side profile,
it is the line drawn by connecting the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin.
If the lips are
significantly in front of this line, they may look protrusive,
and when they are positioned appropriately behind it,
the side profile feels more natural and harmonious.
(It should be slightly set back!)

In general,
the most ideal side profile is considered to be when
the upper lip is slightly behind the line (–2 mm)
and the lower lip is slightly behind the line (–1 mm).

However, because there are large differences depending on nasal height, chin length, and facial shape,
it is not an absolute standard.
Even among celebrities,
it is difficult to find a perfect golden ratio.
Because it is a relative standard,
it is best to view it only as a reference.
Learn a simple check method using your finger
Even without coming to the clinic for a diagnosis,
one of the simplest ways to check at home whether the mouth is protrusive
is the finger diagnostic method.
At the very least, it will help you judge the degree of harmony in your side profile.
Stand in front of a mirror
and place your finger as if connecting the tip of your nose and the tip of your chin.
(It looks like a “shh!” gesture with your finger~)

Turning your head 90 degrees
and taking a photo of your side profile
and then drawing the aesthetic line is another method.
The important thing to note is that
a finger-based E-line check is only a simple self-test,
not an accurate diagnosis.
Actual orthodontic diagnosis is very complex ^^
Whether orthodontic treatment is actually needed
and which method is most appropriate
require a detailed examination and consultation.
Although it is not an absolute standard,
it can help with a first assessment of whether the mouth is protrusive
and can help predict the effect of profile improvement,
which is why I often explain this method.
It is also easy to measure.
If you are worried about your side profile,
try checking it once in front of a mirror with your finger.
And rather than worrying alone,
consulting with a specialist is the most reliable approach.
Orthodontics is not just about aligning teeth.
Facial harmony
and aesthetic changes must also be considered.
