Hello,
I’m Dr. Lee Juri, the chief dentist at Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
These days, many households have only one child,
and awareness of orthodontic treatment has grown,
so it is common for children to start orthodontic treatment early.
However, many people still think orthodontics is something
that should only be done in middle school, high school,
or after becoming an adult.
Don’t you have to wait until all the teeth come in to know?
Many people still think this way.
Malocclusion can also appear during childhood,
and skeletal Class III malocclusion (underbite) in particular is closely related to growth patterns,
so early diagnosis is very important.
The idea that “you have to wait until all the teeth come in”
can actually make you miss the treatment window.
Today, I’ve prepared some important information related to this.

What Is a Child’s Underbite?
You know what an underbite is, right?
He has had surgery now,
but one of the most well-known celebrities with an underbite was comedian Lim Hyuk-pil.

It refers to a condition in which the lower jaw protrudes farther forward than the upper jaw,
making the lower jaw look longer and causing the teeth to meet in reverse.
Please check visually to see whether your child’s teeth look like this.
The front teeth bite in reverse, or the jaw appears to protrude forward
---
When smiling, the gums or tooth alignment appear asymmetrical
During meals, the child has trouble chewing food well and seems uncomfortable swallowing
Speech is unclear, or the child’s speech sounds slurred
If an underbite is severe,
the teeth bite in reverse,
and food cannot be cut properly,
making eating itself difficult and potentially leading to nutritional imbalance.

is related to jaw correction
For children, because they are in a growth period,
orthodontic treatment at this time can help control bone growth and prevent surgery.
If early treatment is missed, many cases require surgical correction once the child becomes an adult.
(Adults can’t just decide to get jaw correction..)
Why Orthodontic Treatment Is Needed During Growth
Because children’s jawbones are still growing,
this is the time when bone growth can be guided or restrained.
It is only possible during the period when height is growing.
It is appealing because jawbone position can be improved without surgery,
but because it is only possible during a specific period,
parents need to check for a child’s underbite first
so that orthodontic treatment can be done.
(If a child’s teeth are aligned in reverse,
you must visit the dentist!)

The most effective time is around ages 7 to 10, when baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth.
I recommend checking around the time the teeth start to fall out.
A device is used to control jaw growth,
and representative devices include the following.

- Facemask
This is used to encourage the upper jaw to grow forward.
It is a representative device for underbite correction,
but the downside is...
because it is visible from the outside,
many girls, in particular, are reluctant to wear it.
It would be ideal to wear it only while sleeping,
but it is effective when worn for more than 12 hours a day.
- Palatal Expansion Device (RPE)
I introduced this not long ago, right?
It is used when the upper jaw is narrow
to widen it.
PreOrtho is also a device that has recently been gaining attention in underbite correction.

It is not indicated for skeletal cases.
If the problem is with bone growth itself,
it is not an appropriate indication.
Because it controls muscle force,
it does not fit the indications.

Orthodontic treatment for children is the first step in supporting natural growth.
Your child’s jawbone growth is still continuing right now.
If you miss it, you may regret it for the rest of your life.
This is the most important time to change the direction of your child’s facial growth.
Please check now to see whether your child’s teeth are biting in reverse.
This has been Dr. Lee Juri, chief dentist.
Thank you.
