Hello,
I’m Ju-ri Lee, the chief director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Gapped front teeth
are one of the treatments people often pursue without much hesitation.
Because they don’t look good,
people keep covering their mouth with their hand,
and start thinking about what treatment options are available.
Today, I’ll explain the three options for closing spaces with orthodontics.

Three orthodontic methods for treating gapped front teeth
The gap between my teeth is what bothers me the most...
250722
A pretty teenage student visited us because she was concerned about the space between her front teeth.
In general, closing spaces is divided into two methods.
Treatments such as resin, laminate veneers, or crowns
are ways to fill the space by adding material.
The downside is that the teeth can become larger.
Using orthodontic treatment
does not involve adding material,
so it preserves the size of the teeth
and looks the most natural.
It also has the advantage of correcting the bite.

Through diagnosis, three orthodontic methods are also recommended.
-
Partial orthodontic treatment for only the spaced area
-
Partial orthodontic treatment for both upper and lower jaws
-
Full orthodontic treatment

Full orthodontic treatment can solve gaps between teeth
and is also used to rearrange the position of other teeth.
The patient said the gap was what bothered her the most,
so I mainly explained partial orthodontic treatment.
- Looking at the pros and cons of the three treatment methods
With orthodontics, there are three cases:
-
Partial orthodontic treatment for only the upper teeth
-
Partial orthodontic treatment extending to the lower teeth
-
Full orthodontic treatment for both upper and lower teeth
Since there are three cases,
she had a lot to think about when choosing a treatment.
In cases like this,
what is the part I most want to improve?
That is the key point to focus on. ^^
If we compare the available treatment options
and their pros and cons...
250722 case of correcting only the upper teeth
- Upper jaw partial orthodontic treatment alone
It has a shorter treatment period
and costs less than the other two treatment options.
The downside is that it is difficult to improve the protrusive appearance,
and there are limits if there is not enough space.
- Partial orthodontic treatment for both upper and lower teeth.
Compared to full orthodontic treatment, the treatment period is about one year shorter.
It allows space control,
which increases safety.
The drawback is that it cannot improve crooked molars.
- Full orthodontic treatment
This was the option I most recommended.

The patient also said the protrusive mouth was a concern,
but if we close the front-teeth gap with partial orthodontic treatment,
the lower front teeth need to move backward.
The upper teeth should overlap the lower teeth,
but this seemed difficult because of insufficient space in the lower jaw.
Rather than partial orthodontic treatment that simply fills the space,
improving the protrusive mouth,
and addressing the crooked lower molars as well,
full orthodontic treatment was more advantageous in the long term,
so I recommended full orthodontic treatment.
The estimated treatment period was two years...
To improve the protrusive mouth,
extracting four premolars was necessary.

Orthodontic treatment may look simple,
but there are many factors to consider. ^^
Depending on the patient’s oral characteristics,
there can also be three different orthodontic options,
which I explained.
I will suggest a method that can satisfy both the result the patient wants
and treatment safety.
