Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, Chief Director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
The Chuseok holiday is coming soon.
After the holiday ends,
many patients visit us because
their restoration has fallen out.
This often happens after eating sticky foods like hangwa or yakgwa,
and problems arise.
There are also various treatment methods when a restoration falls out.
The internal condition determines the treatment direction.
Today, I’ll explain the treatment methods by case after a tooth falls out.

- Why do restorations fall out during meals? (Cause)
The crown fell out while I was eating.
There are so many people like this.
250513 Fallen restoration
When a tooth falls out during a meal, people are often surprised.
This... wasn’t it fixed with something strong...?
You may think it would never come off,
but as the saying goes, nothing lasts forever,
so over time, a restoration can definitely come loose.
Especially sticky foods like yeot, caramel, and rice cakes
weaken the bonding strength and make restorations come off more easily.
When the adhesive (cement) gets old,
it can dissolve from the inside and its bonding strength weakens.
When you eat sticky foods,
it pulls on the tooth and the restoration,
causing it to detach suddenly.
But the important thing is
what the inside of the restoration looks like after it falls out.
- Three treatment methods
250310 Cases where reattachment of a restoration is possible
If it simply came off because the bonding strength weakened,
and the inside is clean,
reattaching the restoration solves the problem.
In this case, the existing restoration can be reused.
If there is severe decay inside,
it is often because a long time has passed since treatment.

If it is damaged but there is no inflammation at the root of the tooth and it is clean,
it may be reinforced and a new crown made and used.
240430 Broken tooth
If there is inflammation at the root end
and the tooth has broken and come out, extraction and an implant are needed.
The idea that “if it fell out, it can just be glued back in”
changes completely depending on the internal condition.
Sometimes patients ask us to glue it back in again
even when the internal condition is not good.
But if it is forced back on like that, it will soon
fall out again, or the tooth may be damaged even more.
Because there is decay inside and it has deteriorated,
the adhesive cannot function properly.
In the end, it falls out again in just a few days.

The condition of the restoration is also important.
If there is a hole in the restoration,
there is often decay in the underlying tooth.
Food has entered through the gap in the hole
and caused the decay to spread.
Using the fact that it has fallen out,
a fundamental treatment is needed.
If the inside is clean, reattach it.
If there is decay or fracture, reinforce part of it.
If it has broken down to the root, implant!
These three points summarize the treatment options.
When a tooth falls out during a meal,
it can actually become an opportunity.
The internal condition can only be checked after removing the restoration,
so if it happened by chance,
it is fortunate that it came off,
and this may be your chance to have it checked
and gain the opportunity to use it for 10 more years.
I hope today’s post was helpful.
Thank you!
