Hello,
I’m Lee Juri, the chief director of Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic.
Patients who are told that they need implants often think,
"Ah... the time has come..."
"I wanted to avoid this as much as possible...."
and feel discouraged.
Even one surgery is scary and intimidating,
so how must patients feel when several teeth are missing
and multiple areas need treatment?
Should everything be implanted at once?
Or should it be done little by little, in stages?
Today, based on my clinical experience,
I’d like to answer this question
and help you out.

- Differences between staged surgery and simultaneous surgery
There is no fixed number of implants that must be placed in a single day.
In some cases, the entire mouth is implanted in one day.

Whether implants are done at the same time
or in stages
depends on the patient’s jawbone condition,
physical health, and degree of psychological readiness.
There are definitely patients who feel more comfortable doing it in stages,
and there are also patients with the attitude of,
"Let’s just get it done all at once!"

First, there are patients who choose to divide the treatment by area.
This can also be done by splitting the right and left sides,
or by treating one or two molars at a time.
The number of surgeries is decided after discussion.
One advantage is that the psychological burden is lower.
However, the treatment period can become longer, and some people may end up postponing it.
I’ll explain that in a moment, so please read to the end!
250310 Teeth that collapsed simultaneously
If the treatment is done simultaneously, such as on both sides
or both the upper and lower teeth,
early on, pain or swelling may feel uncomfortable.
However, the treatment period becomes shorter,
and the number of clinic visits also decreases.
- Does the surgery time differ?
If the surgery is done all at once,
what many patients worry about most is that it will take a long time...
and that recovery after surgery will be difficult.
These are the two main concerns.
First, regarding surgery time,
placing multiple implants does not make the surgery time increase several times over.

As mentioned earlier,
we now use digital guided surgery,
so whether three implants are placed or four,
most procedures are completed within 30 minutes.
In a patient I treated recently,
placing five implants took about 20 minutes.
Because so many patients have dental phobias,
many hesitate to have the surgery done all at once.
It can feel like a major construction project.

When the surgical area increases,
the discomfort may be a little greater for the first few days.
But if the surgery is done in stages,
you have to go through the recovery period again each time.
It’s like resetting back to the beginning...?
In the end, the total recovery period becomes longer.
Until treatment is finished,
one major downside is that eating remains uncomfortable...

From my personal experience,
when I listen to patients’ feedback...
when surgery is done in stages,
many people say they can’t bring themselves to have surgery again....
In fact, patients who had simultaneous surgery often say
it feels refreshing to get it all done at once.
Surgery-related decisions are made
after enough discussion with the patient.
But above all, what matters most
is starting treatment itself.
The worst thing is
continuing to delay treatment.
If you keep postponing it,
the bone may dissolve further,
or even the adjacent teeth may collapse.
Then the surgery becomes larger, and the burden of cost and time increases as well.
Simply deciding to begin treatment is already
a great thing. ^^
If you need implants and are wondering,
"Should I do them at the same time, or in stages?"
I recommend first coming to the clinic and getting an accurate examination.
