Hello,
This is Seoul Vardi Dental Clinic.
For patients aged 65 and older, two covered implants are applied for life.
But when you actually go in for a consultation,
you will hear that you need to choose from several options.
Which one would you like?
This part will incur an additional cost.
You may wonder why there are so many choices and why the cost changes even though it is covered by insurance.
In fact, an implant is divided into three structures.
Each of these structures has options you can choose from.
I’ll explain in detail in today’s post.

- What is the post in a covered implant?
An implant is made up of
the root (artificial tooth root),
the crown (prosthesis),
and the
abutment, which connects the two
in these three parts.
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic, Covered Implants? Why Are There Additional Costs?
In the end, the post in a covered implant
is the
'bridge in the middle' between the implant and the prosthesis.
The type and material this bridge is made of
can greatly affect the stability of the prosthesis, gum health,
and even the long-term lifespan of the implant.
- What is the difference between posts in covered implants?
Standard abutment
A standard post is a cylindrical, pre-made shape produced in a factory.
Like an off-the-rack suit,
it is standardized and used without finely considering each patient’s gum shape or oral structure.
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic, Covered Implants? Why Are There Additional Costs?
It is inexpensive and can be applied quickly,
but because it does not fit each person’s oral environment well, gaps are more likely to form between the prosthesis and the gums,
which increases the risk of food getting stuck or the prosthesis coming loose.
In some cases, when the opposing tooth has descended and the space for the implant is narrow,
the prosthesis itself may need to be made smaller.

If a standardized, off-the-shelf post is used in this situation,
the retention of the prosthesis may be even lower,
which can cause it to come out easily.

Even if the tooth is reattached,
it is honestly difficult to guarantee that a prosthesis attached to a short post will remain strong going forward.
Custom abutment (custom post)
A custom abutment
takes into account each patient’s gum shape,
tooth spacing, and even the subtle angle at which the implant was placed,
and is precisely designed and made on an individual basis.
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic, Why post selection matters during covered implant treatment
It feels like a custom-tailored suit,
carefully measured to fit your body.
It is especially often used for front tooth implants, where appearance is important,
or when the opposing tooth has descended and the space for the prosthesis is limited.
Because there is almost no gap between the gums and the prosthesis,
the likelihood of food getting trapped or the prosthesis coming loose is significantly lower,
making it much more advantageous for increasing the long-term lifespan of the implant.
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic, Covered Implants? Why Are There Additional Costs?
- Isn’t bone grafting not covered even for covered implants? Why does it cost extra..
Yes, bone grafting is not covered by insurance.
Covered implants are only covered for the implant placement itself,
and the cost of bone grafting is not covered.
This is not only the case at our clinic; it is the same at any clinic.
Just as the number of implants is set at two for life, bone grafting is also not covered,
because that is a standard set by the government.
The cost of bone grafting varies depending on the level of difficulty,
and the worse the bone condition is, the more it may cost.
