So I often see patients who stop treatment after only getting the temporary tooth.

As the saying goes, your mind changes when you go into the bathroom and when you come out,

Today, I’ll honestly talk about the risks.

A tooth that has had root canal treatment is like “an old tree that has lost all its moisture.”

Because it no longer receives nourishment, the tooth becomes very dry and brittle.

1. Maintaining daily life

It helps you eat and speak normally even during treatment.

3. Preventing shifting

It maintains the space so nearby teeth do not tip into the empty area.

4. Maintaining gum shape

It helps create a nice shape in the gum area where the final tooth will be placed.

In other words, a temporary tooth is the “foundation work” needed for the final prosthetic to fit in properly.

Sometimes, if a temporary tooth is made very well, it can hold up without breaking for quite a while. ^^;

But even if the temporary tooth is firmly attached, the inside is not necessarily safe.

Compared with the final prosthetic, the surface is slightly rough, making it a very good environment for bacteria and food particles to cling to.

2. Wear creates tiny “gaps.”

Even if you’re lucky and it doesn’t break, wear will occur as you keep using it.

If food or bacteria get in through those gaps, the root canal treatment you worked so hard on can be ruined.

3. The inside loosens and bacteria grow.

Even if it looks fine on the outside, the adhesive inside wears away and inflammation spreads toward the root of the tooth.

The patient I’m going to introduce now was exactly such a case.

This patient had previously undergone root canal treatment on the lower left molar,

and because they didn’t have time and it didn’t hurt, they had been living with the temporary tooth for a long time.

Then recently, the tooth started hurting badly again, so they came to the clinic.

We had them bite on a hard object like a wooden chopstick to check,

and even with just a slight bite, they felt severe pain.

This suggested that the tooth may have cracked.

Looking at the tooth root on the CT, we could indeed see a crack.

What was even more serious was the “dark area” between the tooth roots.

This was bone that had been destroyed by inflammation.

The inflammation had spread all the way up to just above the root canal marked in red....

Because the root itself was cracked and the bone had also dissolved,

even if we performed root canal retreatment in such a case, the prognosis would not be good.ㅜㅜ

In the end, unfortunately, we decided to extract the tooth and proceed with an implant.

To rebuild the bone that had been lost to inflammation, a bone graft was performed,

and now the implant has been completed securely.

If the crown treatment had been finished a little sooner, we might have been able to save the natural tooth,

so this was a very regrettable case.

A temporary tooth is not the final destination; it is only a short stop along the way.

Just because it doesn’t hurt right now, or because it hasn’t broken, do not leave it untreated.
