Hello, this is Cocoline Clinic.
Last week, among the various types of revision surgery, we looked at implant deviation, which is one of the most common issues that can occur.
Today, before explaining other types, I’d like to talk about revision surgery materials.

Let’s begin with revision surgery materials. :)

In most cases, the reason people decide on revision surgery after their first operation is that, as time passes after surgery,
the nasal tip droops or the bridge height lowers, leading them to consider revision surgery.
However, once you have already gone through the first surgery,
the inside of the nose has been damaged, so the procedure must be performed even more carefully than the first surgery.
To do that, you need to be able to choose the right implant for yourself.
Let’s take a look at the revision surgery materials used at Cocoline.

First is ear cartilage.
Ear cartilage is soft and elastic, making it a good material for reinforcing the shape of the nasal tip.
However, this is possible only if ear cartilage was not used in the previous surgery.

Second is septal cartilage.
This is obtained by harvesting the flat part inside the nose.
It is considered one of the most efficient materials in rhinoplasty.
You could think of it as a material that combines the advantages of ear cartilage and rib cartilage.
Although it is the most commonly used material,
the results can vary greatly depending on the surgeon’s skill.
Since the key to septal cartilage is securing the material as accurately as possible,
we recommend undergoing surgery with a medical team that knows the internal structure of the nose well and has extensive experience and know-how in septal harvesting.

Third is rib cartilage (chest cartilage).
From the second revision surgery onward, many people prefer rib cartilage in order to prevent the nasal tip from drooping and to achieve clearer improvement and correction.
There are two types of rib cartilage:
autologous rib cartilage and donated rib cartilage.
Donated rib cartilage is a material made by processing chest cartilage harvested from another person.
Unlike autologous rib cartilage, it does not require an additional surgical procedure, so the surgery time may be shorter.
However, because it is not a material taken from your own body, the likelihood of side effects after surgery is higher than with autologous rib cartilage, so it is a material that requires careful consideration before choosing.
So, what is autologous rib cartilage?
Autologous rib cartilage refers to harvesting part of your own chest cartilage, and an incision is made at the area where the ribs are located.
Although this takes a relatively long time, it is safer than donated rib cartilage and has fewer side effects, which is why many people prefer it.
