Today, I’ll explain swelling by time after surgery, along with ways to manage and reduce it.

1. The day of surgery

You may not swell as much as you expect on the day of surgery. In fact, if you look in the mirror right after surgery, you might think, It’s not as bad as I thought. However, swelling begins to slowly appear about 6 hours after the surgery ends.

(Since breathing through the nose is not easy after surgery, many people breathe through the mouth, and if their mouth becomes dry, they may end up drinking a lot of water. Excessive fluid intake can actually make swelling worse, so we recommend following the instructions provided by the hospital for proper care.)

2. Day 3

As mentioned earlier, swelling gradually begins to develop after surgery, and around days 3–4, it is usually at its worst, to the point where it can be hard to open your eyes or even open your mouth wide.

3. Day 7

This is when the larger swelling outside the nose begins to subside. There may still be swelling across the bridge and tip of the nose, but daily life is still very possible with a mask on. Some people also still have a bit of swelling around the bridge and eyes.

(Usually, the splint is removed most often around the 1-week mark.)

4. Day 10

Swelling in the bridge of the nose slowly begins to move downward. If there is bruising, this is also when the color changes from purple to yellow. The feeling of tightness across the entire nose usually starts to fade quickly after day 10.

This is a stage where daily life is fully manageable if you wear a mask.

5. 1 month

The chance that swelling remains at the tip of the nose is under 40%. Swelling from the bridge to the middle of the nose has mostly gone down. Since washing your face and wearing makeup are all possible as usual, you can comfortably return to daily life except for a slight pulling sensation in the nose.

After 1 month, the speed at which swelling goes down can vary depending on eating habits and lifestyle. In people whose swelling resolves quickly, it may disappear completely by weeks 3–4, but if swelling does not go down much, tip swelling can remain for up to 6 months.
