What is a cavity (caries)?

A cavity is sometimes simply described as a “tooth decay disease,” but the correct term is dental caries (caries).
In the past, it was called a cavity (蟲齒), as if worms had eaten away at the teeth.
(A naming sense that makes you nod~ㅎㅎ)
The problem is that cavities do not suddenly appear one day.
So why do cavities develop?
From here, let’s go step by step through the mechanism!
Focus! More focus~ It’s not difficult. Let’s get started right now!
The 4-step process of cavity formation
- Bacterial invasion in the mouth

Even if we brush our teeth after eating, there are blind spots that the bristles cannot reach, such as the narrow gaps between teeth or the deep grooves on the chewing surface of the molars.
Especially if you don’t use dental floss or interdental brushes?
For bacteria, that place is practically a fully equipped studio apartment.
That’s how bacteria settle there.
They build a home called plaque (a bacterial film) and begin their quiet activity without us knowing.
- Bacteria’s food (food debris)

Just because bacteria have settled in doesn’t mean it’s over.
Bacteria also need food to survive, right?
Their food is the food debris left between teeth, especially sugar.
Sweet desserts, carbonated drinks, white rice, bread...
The traces of those foods that haven’t yet left our mouths are broken down very deliciously and happily by bacteria.
And as a result, they leave behind something called acid.
Do you know how harsh this acid is?
It begins to gently, slowly, and quietly erode the tooth surface, that is, the enamel.
- Acid attack that breaks down the outer wall of the tooth

Acidic substances gradually eat away at the outermost layer of the tooth, the first line of defense, the enamel.
For reference, enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body.
But that extremely harsh acid quietly seeps in and breaks down that hard wall.
Because enamel has no nerves, even if erosion progresses, there are often no noticeable symptoms—making you think, “Is it still okay?”
But inside, it is already collapsing quietly, without anyone knowing.
- Invasion of dentin → attack on the nerve → explosion of tooth pain

Once the enamel collapses, the next stop is dentin.
This area is much softer and reacts sensitively to external stimuli.
Even a slight touch can cause a sharp, tingling sensation.
And eventually, the cavity reaches the pulp, the center of the tooth where the nerve is located.
By this point... you can probably feel it, right?
A deep, heavy pain that no one can avoid, the kind that makes you think, “I really can’t stand this.”
At this stage, root canal treatment followed by a crown becomes the basic option.
If the cavity has spread deep into the root?
Then extraction awaits as the final option.
A cavity that seemed small suddenly levels up in treatment time, scope, and cost...
At this point, it’s not “I should have endured a little longer,” but rather, “I should have come a little earlier...” that remains as regret.

Maggok-dong_rapidly progressing cavity
Finally, to briefly summarize the cavity progression process:
Bacteria settle in → feed on food debris → release acid → dissolve the tooth, and a cavity develops.
That’s how cavities quietly and precisely break down our teeth.
Fortunately, if cavities are detected at an early stage through regular checkups, they can be treated simply.
Please remember that early treatment reduces both time and cost, and above all, it is the best way to protect your natural teeth.
