Now, today’s story is the next part!
We’ll take a look at the root canal treatment process.
The phrase “removing the nerve” may sound scary,
but if you look at it step by step, it’s not that difficult.
And at Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, we never make it scary.
We proceed accurately, carefully, and meticulously.
So let’s take a close look at the process, step by step.
Step-by-Step Root Canal Treatment Process
Step 1: Remove decay + expose the nerve space
![Majeong-dong Dental Clinic_ "The Tooth Structure Restoration Project" [2. Step-by-Step Process of Root Canal Treatment] image 2](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/2d293f68c823c2fd3d624b635c7d874eed5dbe07371b9921a38b28b4ab408d5b.png)
Majeong-dong Dental Clinic_After decay removal, the nerve space is exposed
If there is decay, we remove that first.
Then we need to open the space inside the tooth where the nerve is located (the root canal).
Because a very small opening must be made, precise manual skill is required.
During this process, we also check how far the damaged nerve and infected tissue have spread.
Step 2: Measure the nerve length and remove the infected pulp

Step-by-Step Process of Root Canal Treatment] image 3](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/3b61ba27d9e2a955a11a70e1708b231399ce09c6d546cd1b88c5ed88887d59fe.png)

The nerve length differs from tooth to tooth and root to root.
Even the same front tooth or molar can be different,
and even in the same person, each tooth has a different structure.
If the nerve is not removed precisely, inflammation can return,
so we use specialized instruments to measure the nerve length accurately.
Now we begin removing the damaged nerve in earnest.
Using a small, precise instrument called a file, we clean the inside of the tooth thoroughly.
It is not simply a feeling of “digging it out,” but more like a cleaning process that sweeps away all bacteria.
Since every tiny remaining piece of nerve must be removed, it takes some time.
That is why root canal treatment is often not completed in a single visit.
Depending on the degree of infection or the shape of the roots, it may be carried out over 2 to 6 or more visits.
Therefore, you should not stop just because the pain has lessened.
If you stop because it no longer hurts, the remaining bacteria can quietly spread again…
and later, extraction may end up being the only option left.
So please be sure to follow the treatment schedule.
Step 3: Seal the root canal (nerve space)

After the nerve is removed, that space becomes empty.
If it is simply left open, bacteria will get back in, right?
So we use special materials to firmly fill the empty space.
This is called root canal filling.
At this stage, the inside of the tooth is sealed once again.
Step 4: Restore the crown portion of the tooth (core)

Majeong-dong Dental Clinic_Core and post
A tooth that has received root canal treatment
often has a heavily reduced crown portion,
so a core procedure that refills the inside with restorative materials such as resin
is absolutely necessary.
However, if a large amount has been removed or only the root is barely left,
it becomes difficult to withstand chewing force with just a core.
In such cases, a metal or
called a post is placed deep inside the root to reinforce the structure.
When the core and post are done together,
and a crown is placed on top of them,
the tooth is restored into a strong structure that can last a long time.
Is that the end? No.
We’ve saved the root of the tooth, but now the crown portion must be placed over it.
Step 5: Protect with a crown

Majeong-dong Dental Clinic_Protecting a tooth with a crown
A tooth that no longer has a nerve can no longer
receive nourishment on its own, so it becomes more likely to break.
That is why it must be protected by covering the crown with a prosthesis.
At this point, if a custom crown is made and placed,
it changes into a sturdy structure that can withstand chewing force.
Today’s key summary
-
Root canal treatment follows three key steps: removing bacteria → sealing the inside → protecting the outside!
-
It is often not finished in one visit, and each step requires precision.
-
If treatment is interrupted, bigger problems can occur, so it must be completed all the way through.
Next time, we’ll come back with “After root canal treatment: precautions.”
Teeth that have had their nerves removed need to be cared for more delicately.
If you were wondering what to watch out for after root canal treatment, please be sure to check the next post.
