Today’s topic from Dia Dental Clinic is
something a little unfamiliar: sinus lift surgery.
But if you are considering implants,
this is one key point you absolutely should not overlook.
So, in this post, let’s take an easy-to-understand look at what a sinus lift is
and in what cases it is needed.
What is the sinus?

The maxilla literally means the “upper jaw,”
and the term sinus refers to an “empty space.”
In other words, the “sinus” is an air-filled empty space located inside the upper jaw bone,
beneath the cheekbone.
Simply put, it is the space inside the cheeks beside the nose.
This sinus is not just an empty space.
It amplifies sound, filters dust and bacteria,
and plays a small but important role in reducing the weight of the skull.
But did you know that this sinus can become an obstacle to implant surgery?
What is a sinus lift?

An implant surgery literally involves
placing a “post” into the jawbone.
For the post to stand firmly,
the underlying bone must of course be strong.
However, the upper jaw, especially the bone in the upper molar area,
often becomes thinner or disappears naturally over time.
Why does this happen?
✔ When an upper molar was extracted long ago and left untreated for a long time
✔ When a lot of bone has been lost due to periodontitis (gum disease)
✔ When the area has not been used for chewing for a long time and therefore has received little stimulation
In these situations,
even if we try to place an implant,
there is not enough bone to support it.
In other words, there is no ground on which to place the post.
That is when a sinus lift is needed.

A sinus lift (Sinus Lift) is a surgery in which
we carefully raise the thin membrane of the “sinus” space inside the upper jaw,
then place bone graft material inside to create a firm foundation.
Simply put, you can think of it as the foundation work of leveling and firmly filling in a collapsed site.
Through this process, the insufficient bone is reinforced,
allowing an implant to be placed stably on top of it.
When is a sinus lift needed?
- When it has been a long time since a molar was lost

If you spend years with a missing tooth,
the jawbone gradually resorbs and decreases.
And that empty space is taken over as the sinus descends.
In this case, simple bone grafting is not enough.
A procedure to lift the sinus and fill the area with bone is needed.
- When the jawbone is too thin for an implant

Just as a plant cannot grow in a pot without soil for its roots,
an implant cannot be placed if there is no bone.
In such cases, the sinus is gently lifted,
and bone is placed in the space beneath it.
That is what we call a sinus lift.
- When an upper molar is extracted due to periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious disease that can even dissolve bone.
If a tooth was extracted because of this,
there is a high chance that a large amount of bone has already been lost.
In this case, it is difficult to proceed with an implant immediately without caution.
Sinus lift + bone graft → healing period → implant
This sequence must be followed carefully for safety!
Shall we summarize today’s content?
-
The sinus is an air space inside the upper jaw.
-
When this space descends due to age, tooth loss, periodontitis, and similar causes,
the jawbone becomes thin, making it impossible to place an implant.
-
At this point, a sinus lift is performed to raise the sinus,
and bone grafting is done inside it to create the foundation for implant surgery!
Implants in the upper molar area are closely related to the sinus structure,
so simple bone grafting alone is often not enough.
In such cases, the sinus lift introduced today can become
the key to implant success.
