When you hear “resin,” it may sound like a material used only in dentistry, right?
In fact, it is a versatile material used everywhere in daily life, from cars and airplanes to home appliances.
But did you know that there are moments when this resin really shines in dentistry too?
So from now on, together with Seoul Dia Dental Clinic,
we’ll take a fun look at how resin is used in dentistry and in what cases
it becomes absolutely necessary.
When should resin treatment be done?
- When a small cavity starts to appear

Resin is a reinforced plastic material that is very similar in color to teeth,
and it is used to restore teeth naturally so they look like their original color.
It is mainly used for small cavities or surface damage.
In particular, when a cavity has formed only in the enamel (the outer surface of the tooth),
filling it with resin is satisfying in both aesthetics and function.
On the other hand, if the cavity has gone deeper and progressed to the dentin,
prosthetic treatments such as inlays or onlays may be considered instead of resin.
- When the hole needs to be sealed after root canal treatment

After root canal treatment, a hole is created in the crown portion of the tooth,
and if this space is not properly sealed, bacteria can re-enter.
At this time, resin is often used as a core filling material because it has excellent sealing ability and good durability.
A resin core plays the role of firmly preventing bacteria from entering the inside of the tooth.
- When the boundary between the tooth and gum is worn down (cervical abrasion)

If the gums recede due to brushing too hard, teeth grinding, clenching, or gum disease,
the root portion of the tooth becomes exposed.
In this area, dentin, which is weaker than enamel, is exposed, making it more likely to feel sensitive or develop cavities.
Resin has excellent adhesion and aesthetics,
so it is well suited for smoothly filling this boundary area.
There is also an insurance-covered GI material, but because it has a higher chance of falling out,
resin is more advantageous when considering both appearance and durability.
- When part of a tooth breaks off

Magok-dong Dental_Tooth fracture
With hard foods, impacts during sports, or unexpected trauma,
part of a tooth can sometimes break off.
If there is no nerve damage and the fractured area is small,
the shape can be restored naturally with resin.
Especially in highly visible areas such as the front teeth,
the shade and shape can be carefully matched, which leads to high psychological satisfaction as well.
- When there is a slight gap between the front teeth
![Mokgok Dental_“In these cases, resin is the answer” [1. How resin is used in dentistry] image 6](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/0eb48a90f38b680403977908f63e5648007c09902b195e8135720d6672e665b1.png)
Magok Dental_Gapped front teeth
If orthodontic treatment is not necessary, but the small gap between the front teeth is noticeable when smiling,
there is a method of filling it with resin.
However, if the gap is large or the space is wide due to gum recession,
it may be difficult to create a natural shape with resin alone.
That is why it is important to confirm the “possible range” accurately through a consultation before treatment.
- Filling grooves to prevent cavities (sealants)

Magok Dental_Sealant
The surface of molars has deep grooves where food can easily get stuck.
If a flowable resin-based material is placed in these areas,
it helps prevent bacteria from settling and is very effective in preventing cavities.
In particular, for children and adolescents aged 18 and under, sealants may be covered by insurance,
so they can receive treatment without much burden.
However, it does not apply to molars that already have cavities,
so it is a good idea to check in advance during regular exams.
Now, let me summarize the moments when resin treatment is needed that we looked at today.
-
Small cavities → natural and quick restoration
-
Filling after root canal treatment → blocks bacteria, excellent sealing ability
-
Wear at the boundary between tooth and gum (cervical abrasion) → helps prevent sensitivity and cavities
-
Partially broken tooth → restores shape and function at the same time
-
Slightly gapped front teeth → simple orthodontic effect
-
Filling molar grooves (sealants) → cavity prevention
Resin is a material that can take care of both aesthetics and function,
but whether it is suitable depends on the condition of the tooth, its location, and chewing habits.
That is why careful judgment by an experienced medical team is essential.
Resin is certainly a great material,
but there is no formula that says “resin is always the best choice.”
Depending on the damaged area of the tooth, chewing habits, and the oral environment,
the most appropriate treatment method will differ.
