Hello.
Honest treatment, easy-to-understand explanations!
This is Seoul Dia Dental Clinic near Magok Station, where a smile comes to mind before worry.
These days, the temperature difference between day and night is big,
so many people feel like their mouth’s condition goes up and down like catching a cold, right?
But one day, when you look in the mirror, it looks like a pimple has formed,
with one side of the gum bulging out,
and when you press it, it feels like something might come out with a “pop”?
This is very likely a gum abscess pocket (gingival abscess).

The problem is that this is not just inflammation on the surface.
In severe cases, it can lead to jawbone damage, infection of other teeth,
and even spread to systemic inflammation.
So you should never dismiss it by thinking, “It’ll calm down after a while.”
So today, I’ll organize the main causes of this gum abscess pocket
in Dia Dental Clinic style.^^
When your gums are swollen and throbbing…
‘5 causes of gum abscess pockets (gingival abscesses)’
- Inflammation caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar
![Magiok-dong Dental Clinic_ “It’s swollen and pus is coming out” [1. Causes of gum abscess pockets] image 2](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/b62d56c41e7d7f5dfc9a131f346e9e1e75b56d3f7c9c5d188751bf022d350a6f.png)

Pus in the gums means
that bacteria are already throwing a party inside.
When plaque or tartar builds up in the gaps inside the gums that brushing cannot reach,
bacteria multiply enthusiastically there.
The body sends white blood cells to fight against them.
The result of that fight is pus.
It collects and swells up like a “pocket.”
In simple terms,
if bacteria are the “uninvited guests,” white blood cells are the “clean-up crew,”
and the gums turned into a battlefield are the site of that struggle.
As a result, inflammation develops, and the gums become swollen and painful.
- Infection from tooth nerve inflammation spreading to the root tip

Magiok-dong Dental Clinic_Root cavity
When a cavity becomes deep and reaches the tooth nerve (pulp),
the inflammation spreads to the tip of the tooth root (apex).
Eventually, bacteria break through the jawbone and push outward,
forming an abscess pocket.
In other words, although the gums seem to be the problem on the surface,
the actual cause is often an infection inside the tooth.
In this case, simply squeezing out the gum pus
or applying and taking medicine will not solve the problem.
The source of the infection must be removed through nerve treatment so that the pus does not come back.
- Gum disease causes the gums and bone to collapse, forming pus

Gum disease is often thought of lightly as just “swollen, bleeding gums.”
But in fact, it is a disease that melts away the gum bone
and destroys the foundation supporting the teeth.
As periodontitis progresses, a deep gap (periodontal pocket)
forms between the gums and the teeth,
and inflammation develops as bacteria accumulate inside.
Eventually, pus builds up,
and you end up wondering, “Why are my gums so swollen?”
Especially in this case,
it is often not just one tooth problem,
but symptoms appear in multiple teeth at the same time.
In other words, cases like “I went in because one spot hurt, but it had spread to the side too” are very common.
- Remaining bacteria after incomplete root canal treatment cause reinfection

Magiok-dong Dental Clinic_Recurrence after root canal treatment
If the tooth has already had root canal treatment,
but the gums swell again or pus forms again?
Then the root canal treatment was likely not performed completely.
The inside of a tooth root is more complex than you might think.
If bacteria remain,
or if one root canal was missed,
bacteria will grow again inside.
Over time, pus forms again,
and in severe cases, it can develop into a periapical cyst.
In this case, detailed treatment such as retreatment of the root canal
or apicoectomy may be needed.
- Physical damage such as tooth cracks or impact

Lastly, physical impact or tiny cracks.
When you chew hard foods (for example, dried squid, ice, nuts, etc.),
a small crack, or fissure, can form in the tooth,
and bacteria can enter through that gap and cause inflammation.
Also, a tooth that was injured in the past,
or a tiny gap left after dental treatment, can be a cause.
In other words, a small stimulus that seemed like “no big deal”
can grow into a major problem over time.
To summarize!
The main causes of gum abscess pockets are as follows:
-
Inflammation caused by the buildup of tartar and plaque
-
Nerve infection spreads to the root tip
-
Pus forms as the gums and bone collapse
-
Remaining bacteria cause reinflammation
-
Physical damage such as tooth cracks or impact
A gum abscess pocket may look like “just a little swelling” on the outside,
but inside, the inflammation is likely already spreading.
Simply popping it because pus has formed,
or enduring it with medicine, is absolutely not a solution.
You must find and treat the root cause of the inflammation to prevent recurrence.
